Been there done this and here is an idea for you to take notes. Today I will be going in my shop and spraying my main machines down with WD40 ( WD= Water Displacement ) and then covering with tarps or visquen , this is all in case of roof damage to shop happens. Does not have to flood to be catastrophic to shop equipment if roof gets ripped off or tree lands and crushes roof and causes a ditch to funnel water inside. Just throwing this out there for you to think about your main machines. Hope and Pray everybody in Irma's path stays safe and dry. Be safe,

Both ya'll are right in the main path, especially Stuart, Fla. Good luck and my Prayers are with ya'll.

Your prep sounds as good as anything can be done.

Protect what you can ... then head for a safe place to ride out the storm. Stuff can be repaired or replaced, but you and your families are irreplaceable.

Praying you and the family stay safe and you don't end up having to deal with damage to your propery.

Most equipment will survive flooding if the trash, sand and other foreign materials are rinsed out with clean water and then dried with warm forced air within a day or two. This includes electronics. Just make sure the power is disconnected prior to the storm and prior to cleaing! I've recovered several computers and numerous pieces of electronic equipment by flushing with warm clean water, then drying with forced air. It's not a good idea to use compressed air from a compressor with a plastic, neoprene, or rubbber hose. The air flow through the hose ionizes the molecules and can cause damage to some of the more delicate components. Fans and blowers are ok.
Make sure everything is bone dry before applying power!

I would bag your belts and sand paper and all that expensive handle material.

Hope this helps
God bless
Jim

Sounds like you're preparing all you can. I guess I would suggest getting some Rubbermaid bins and putting small items inside them. Sandpaper, belts, wood blocks etc. Best of luck.

Stay safe guys. My brother is down in Naples riding it out as well. Apparently while I was busy prepping here today in eastern South Carolina the path has changed and seems to be heading more west as of now.

Science it strange. These people say they can predict what the weather will be in 100 years to within .5 degrees, but they can't figure out where a hurricane is going to go within 1000 miles 3 days from now. Probably change again by the time I wake up.

Worst case I have enough gas for the rest of the week to drive to work, a couple months worth of propane for forging this winter, the pantry is stocked and I have a direct hook up for the gen at the back of the shop I can plug it into after removing the meter and power the house.

Yea good idea about belts and such. I have some heavy trash bags and I am going to bag them up. All the big stuff lathe, 2 mills, compressor, 2 welders, plasma cutter, drill presses on and on its over whelming the feeling of what could happen with a life time of building tools inventory. Yea lots of Prayers is about all we can all do. Thanks everybody.

You might take photos of everything in your shop prior to the storm. This will help if you need to make a claim with the insurance company after the storm. If nothing else stand in the middle of the shop and do a panarama. Pictures go a long way to proving ownership of something that dissapears or gets trashsed.
Be safe
Jim

Absolutely. I even did these to show attempt to save everything. 55 gal. trash bags are covering equipment pieces and visquen is covering equipment and tool boxes. What a P.I.T.A. but worth the relief.

I have a large and small generator and have 100 gallons of water in fermenting barrels in case generators fail. Freezer full of deer and gator meat. As long as in doesn't treat me too bad I should be good. I am parking my 86 year old mom in her cast iron bath tub thru the worst of it.:D I had her booked on a flight out yesterday and they canceled flights, so here she is.

Wellllll she is a knocking on the door , I got my lariat and Bull whip, I will try to tame this B-tch down before she gets too far away.Storm 9.jpeg Storm 10.jpeg

Lemme know how that lasso works out for you!
God knows they've been looking for way to whup hurricanes for a few years now!

It ain't working to well. I think I gotta give it up, not gonna work. It is wicked outside right now. I have heard sounds that makes me skeered to shine a light out side. I have a 20x20 back patio covered or was, not sure now. and then on the front of my shop is another 20' roof over concrete. So I half expect to l;ose one or both of them. This wind is just ripping with a deep bass sound, not no little tenor or whistling . Let ya,ll know after daylight. Hell the eye won't even reach us till close to 5 a.m.

Good luck brother! Keep your head down, and spirits up!!

Following this thread with deep concern, tempered by positive thoughts... good luck, bud.
