I'm having trouble with my VG-10 Endura 4 when I try to sharpen it... I just can't get that last quarter inch next to the choil sharp. It seems like the blade thickens up a lot in that last millimeter and keeps the area next to it from touching the hone. I'm trying with a DMT coarse stone (a Duo-Fold) and I just can't get it. I have no difficulty getting the rest of the blade scary sharp. Suggestions?

I have to spend extra time with my DMT XX Coarse and pound away at that area to get it thinned out so that it can be easily sharpened like the rest of the blade. If you send it to Tom Krein for a sharpening he may be able to take care of that for you with his sander, not to mention put a wicked edge on the knife. If you really want that knife to vut, have Tom Full Flat grind it for you, you will be amazed at the difference in cutting avility.

Try using the method many japanese use. Move the knife back and forth perpendicular to the stone and gradually move the knife along the edge from ricasso to tip keeping even pressure with both hands on the spine of the blade. Once you have the blade thickness desired, resume your normal sharpening method to get the edge desired. It's really very easy since the pressure is on the edge and you aren't moving the blade in any other direction.

Give it a try.

Unless Mr. Krein is in Canada, I don't see that happening.

NJ: What do you mean by "perpendicular"?

I'm kind of surprised by this issue, the fit and finish on the knife is otherwise excellent and this doesn't sound like a minor oversight to me. I'm not afraid to fix it myself, but I'd have to assume others would be. Is this normal for Enduras, or a common issue?

Just keep going and have patience. I am doing the same thing with my native right now on a course DMT. Takes a bit but it will do the job. Also you might want to use water to slough away the metal.

Keep the stone oriented top to bottom vertical with the knife horizontal in relation to it. Move the knife vertically up and down on the stone along the edge moving it slowly left to right. It sounds more complicated than it really is.

It's not a common problem but I think it occurs when more pressure is applied along the blades length than at the ricasso. It just takes a little practice.

Yeah, that's what I have been doing. And no, this is definitely not a product of improper sharpening (on my part anyway). I noticed this the first time I went to sharpen the knife after purchase.
