problem sharpening ZDP Delica

It works. The blue Delica can shave easily now, even through it's still not as sharp as VG-10 Delica - I think that's caused by my poor sharpening skill and I will improve it in the future.

Thanks to Cliff and everybody in this forum!

Cliff,

So the first step "make the blade fully blunt" made difference?
I will verify the above statement when next time I sharpen it.

Thanks.

It tends to make a large impact because it ensures all weakened metal is removed and minimizes burr issues of deformation/fracture. It also confirms absolutely you are actually hitting the edge with the shaping stage.

So, all those years sharpening on Arkansas stones with only a Buck Scout Lite, and I was actually doing something productive when cutting into the stone so the edge was evenly dull, then starting over from the beginning. I always did 10-20 strokes per side on a soft Ark. stone, then 5-10 per side on a ceramic rod. I dont remember any burr issues, and in fact had difficultly forming and removing burrs when I first read about it in college (1994-1999).

Cutting into the stone to start your sharpening, along with my radioshack lighted microscope, are the two best suggestions I ever got for sharpening. Cliff really has a wealth of knowledge, and I'm glad he's here to pass it on. Those 2 things really brought my sharpness up tremendously, and cut way down on my chase the burr sessions.
