I am just wondering if anyone can tell me what it means when the digital control on the oven reads "tcl" ?

I have a sugar creek oven, with the digital control upgrade.

the oven clicks when i hit start like it normally doesn't but now heat up, the run light comes on, but after a bit it goes to the "tcl" msg. And it doesn't heat up.

I called them but they were already closed for the day. I am just anxious to find what is the problem.

thanks for any help

i was thinking something along those lines, but didnt want to mess with it till i find out exactly whats wrong, incase it is covered under a warranty

I imagine that your Sugar Creek kiln is probably running the same Orton digital controller as mine. From the manual:

tCL
- This alarm indicates that the thermocouple signal is not
responding to the demand for more system power during heat-up.
There are 3 conditions for the
tCL alarm.
1. The heating rate is slower than 9°F (5°C) per Hour
2. The actual kiln temperature is lagging behind the desired
setpoint temperature by more than 100ºF (56ºC).
3. The actual temperature is less than 500ºF (260ºC)
In all cases, the
tCL alarm occurs during heating when little
temperature rise is detected. This can be the result of a component
failure; most likely a failed heating elements or a heater relay. Another
possible problem is with the thermocouple sensor signal; if the
thermocouple probe is not properly positioned in the firing chamber or
if the wiring from the thermocouple has short-circuited the controller

will not detect actual temperature changes in the firing chamber.

You may have a bad heating element by the sound of things.

thanks alot erin!!!

sure hope there is a warranty of some sort, or its just something simple

No problem Andrew. I hope that the folks at Sugar Creek can take care of you. How long have you owned the kiln?

Funny thing is, just yesterday I was cleaning/reorganizing my shop to install some new cabinets and stumbled upon the warranty card for my kiln... unsigned. "Please return this warranty card within 11 days of the date of purchase..." Oops. ;)

Please keep me posted when you resolve the problem.

Guys, my element went in my sc kiln after about a year. i never mailed in the warrantee so i was worried. i called them and explained my problem and that i had checked the element with a multimeter. the lady said " no prioblem" we'll twist you up a new element and get it out to you today" they never asked about warrantee or anything. they're just good people :)

Now, installing the new element is a whole other batch of fun :p

It sounds like an element to me. Take a flashlight and Examine the element for breaks and you may find it.

sugar creek did real good by me, sent new element out next day.....but replacing it is a real S.O.B.!!! ;)

You can repair a broken element by heating the two ends of the break with a torch and twisting together, I would not recommend on a old element but for newer which have installation issues this works well.
