Problem with my CPM-D2 Paramilitary

I haven't had a lot of expendable income to spend on hobbies for the past year, so I was excited to have a little extra cash in my pocket when I recently got a new job. I had been building a list of Things To Buy and at the top was a CPM-D2 Para. It arrived yesterday!

Fit-and-finish: Excellent, better than any knife I currently own. This knife is a bargain, especially considering the high-tech materials that went into it. There is some residual red residue markings left from the laser on top of the locking liner side (same type of markings were left on my BG-42 Military jimping). Doesn't effect usability. Everything else is flawless.

Lock: It locks up very tight with no horizontal or vertical play. I'll have to get used to the compression lock, but I love its simplicity and ease-of-use. Lot of room left for wear. Locks and unlocks smoothly.

Handle: The G-10 is textured like 600 grit sandpaper and is very grippy. Handle is ergonomic in a variety of positions... feels like an extension of my hand (even better than my Military!). A note about the handle color: this is my first foliage green knife and pictures on the internet don't really capture the color very well. It changes tone depending on the background... in my hand it's sort of a muted/faded green-grayish color. I like it a lot - it's a nice change for the standard tactical black.

Blade: The thick, flat ground blade of particle metallurgy tool steel just begs to be used hard. Shaving sharp, good grind lines, sharp tip.

So what's the problem?

I don't think I can force myself to use this knife! :(

I'm not a 'collector' in the since of buying knives to hide them away in a safe or a glass case to look at. I'm not yet rich enough to buy items for the express purpose of stashing them away - I use them out of necessity. This knife was designed to be used, and used hard... but it's just too nice I think.

Excellent job Sal & company!

When you purchase a new automobile, you use it right away.
Usually the first 6 mths you baby it, after the honeymoon wares off,it's used.
Go for it, drive it off the lot. :D

I'm sure after a couple of weeks you will have no problem putting it to good use. Considering you have another excellent blade (BG-42 military) which I assume is a user.

Get out there and use it. I didn't learn to truly love my large Manix and I really started to use it.

Spyderco makes these knives to be used. I felt the same way 3 years ago when I got a Para S30V. After alot of use and near abuse the dang thing still looks new. USE IT.

I was aprehensive about using mine as well, until I thought about it in comparison to my Sebenza. The Seb's Ti handles mark up if you even look at them the wrong way, but the Para's G10 is taking a beating and so far looks no worse for the wear. It is amazing material (my favourite for scales) and makes for an ideal handle. Grip it hard, use it hard... its wear-resistance will just make you appreciate the knife all the more.

I just ordered the Para Military - D2 and can't wait! If you feel bad about using it just look what the folks at Cutlery Science Reviews put their knives through. You won't feel bad at all using it for daily tasks.

So what's the problem?

I don't think I can force myself to use this knife! :(

:D I broke myself early with the D2, the first day I got it I went outside and cut grape vines that were about 3 inch in diameter and I used the tip to do some "drilling" into some of the vines.

Wow, you're having a hard time deciding whether to use a ParaMilitary!?!?!?

Here a solution to help you warm up to it:

take a sheet of computer paper and test the edge (by cutting it). That will

lead you to cardboard then to EDC.

GoodLuck, Peta~

Great knife. It makes a perfect EDC for me. Use it so you will truly remember those things you wrote about it in this forum. I realy like the flat grind for slicing. One Hell of a knife. Hope I can say that?

Send it to yab for a week.

After that, you won't have any qualms about using it. :D

I know the feeling. Every time I buy a knife at the top of my price range I have the hardest time getting myself to actually use it.

Preach on - I hear ya and feel the same way. I got into collecting to use knives - and now I find myself keeping most to look at, admire, photograph - everything but what the knife was meant for - to use to cut things. And I do it each and everytime too - as I am making the arrangements to buy, I say to myself "this time its going to be different...I am going to use this one" - then I get it and treat it with kid gloves and it never gets used - and I don't have expendable income :(

OK - you all convinced me!

This knife is going to the beach this weekend instead of my Military. Already took down some cardboard boxes and it's still popping hairs off my arm. :)

Congradulations on about the best EDC of all time! This knife begs to be used; so do it!

Use that bad boy! I don't have the collector gene, so my limited editions and customs get rebevelled and cut things just like my cheapos. My CPM D2 is coming this week to join it's well used big brother CPM D2 Millie and get a good working as all Spydercos deserve.
