Problem with my current EDC

It dulls rather quickly, it's 440 steel just doesn't cut it anymore and it's time to step up. I've been out of the knife thing for awhile. So tell me, what's the latest in tip up folders using SV30 or better steel.

I know the Griptilian can be carried tip-up and some are offering 154CM steel. I think some Spyderco Natives also offer tip up CPMS30v steel.

I know the Kershaw Blur is available in S30V and can be carried tip-up. As well as a couple of Leeks in S30V.

There's actually a lot of knives that canfit the description. Can you give more details as to what you're looking for?

Price, Size, Main purposes, Etc...

What kind of 440 are you using, A, B, or C? They have quite different properties.

I'll also ask what kind of 440 you're using because
440C is far better steel than 440B or 440A in many
performance parameters.

No offense, rifon (and knarfeng), but I don't believe he would be complaining if his knife was 440C. That's a very fine quality steel that holds an edge very well. I'm sure he's referring to 440A. There are hardly any knives out there made from 440B.

Simple6, most Benchmades are tip-up carry and most a are 154CM (which is great steel) with a few made from 440C (not many anymore [if any]), S30V, and D2. Any of those would do you very well. Checkout the BM 710. An all around fine knife. There are many others. The BM Griptilian model has many different blade designs.

Good look. Shopping around half the fun. If all you have ever used is 440A, you will be in heaven with one of these better steels.

I guess we're wondering if it is 440C because if it is not, then he has a lot more options. 440C, VG10, and 690N all will hold an edge better than 440A or B. There's a lotta good stuff out there in those three steels. And they are generally less pricey than S30V or 154CM. VG10 is pretty popular right now with Spyderco and some of the other makers.

My scottish blood always looks for the least expensive option.

bladeprince, 440C is one of my favorite steels and has been for about 30 years.

You're right of course that few makers use 440B, but 440A is all over the place. And it takes a real nice edge, but does dull quite quickly.

Is simple6 is referring to 440C?
Don't know...

Rifon, I was just making an educated guess. He complained about the knife dulling quickly so I don't think he is talking about 440C. I have 3 knives in 440C and they hold a very good edge for a long time. One of the knives is the BM hunter 190. It came pretty dull and it took many sharpening sessions to get a good edge. But now I can't get the thing to dull and I've cleaned plenty of game with it and also done general camp chores. Seems almost as sharp as the day I finished putting the edge on.

So a friendly wager for a donut says he is talking about 440A. Very good chance he does not know what he has and the knife may not be marked. If he ever happens to tell us what knife he is referring to, we can figure it out.

Regards

You might look at Spyderco's Byrd line , they are very modestly priced and wonderful quality for the price you pay.
I think I paid $25 with shipping on my Cara Cara , the "C C" has recieved excellent reviews , and I absolutly love mine for EDC.
It has both tip up and tip down options.

Hey, it probably is 440A.

In other words, I'd make the same educated guess as you.

The only point I was making was: why would I assume when it's so
easy to ask & find out for sure? :)

Sorry for my slow response and thanks for all the help. It is 440C. I'm looking for something 3.5"-4", tip up, price limit is $200, I'd like a tiger stripe pattern but not a deal breaker, and ofcourse something in a SV30 or better.

Here's a tiger striped Alias...real expensive though, like 260ish. Has S30V but tip down. This knife WOULD have been a winner, in my book, had it not been for ripping off the tiger stripes from strider and its nearly strider price tag. Oh well.

Spyderco Manix is S30V, and you can move the clip to tip up. That's what's in my pocket. Before you shell out for the Rukus, make sure you realize how enormous it is. I would look at some comparison pics first. It's huge. The Manix is huge too, but not that huge.

What exactly are you doing with your 440C blade that's causing it to go dull so quickly? That's a decent steel. It's sounds like you're putting it through some pretty hard use on a regular basis, which suggests some form of specialized use. If you give use a better idea of what you're doing with it, we might be able to give better answers.

True. In my experience, you're not going to notice any substantial difference between good 440C and any of the "brand name" stainless steels, except maybe BG-42.

If you want something where you'll see and feel a difference, I suggest going to a tool steel - D2, M2, A2.
