problem with sog aegis

So I got a sog aegis a couple hours ago. It's a cool little knife but my experience so far is that its a complete piece of ****.

After opening and closing it about 20 times, it started getting harder and harder and harder to close. Now id say I have to use about 20 lbs of force to close it until it finally snaps closed. I'm not sure what could be hanging up.

So I tried loosening the pivot thing. I turned it a couple turns counter clockwise until it stopped turning. With absolutely no difference in blade play or resistence I tried the other way. It just spins forever. I can see the other side turning but have no way to stop it.

Anyway I started to take it apart but couldn't get the pivot thing unscrewed due to said problem. So I screwed the piece of **** back together and stripped one screw in the process since its a plastic ****ing knife with no liner at all.

Anyone know what's wrong besides it being a plastic piece of ****? It's a brand new knife and i don't feel like sending it back and waiting for a month.

Seriously, whenever I need a good laugh about pos knives and poor customer service I head over to the SOG sub fourm.

I'd take it back to were ever you bought it and buy a Spyderco.

Sorry about your problem.

Welcome to the BF. Sounds like you unfortunately received a defective SOG. While plenty of SOG folders receive less than stellar reviews, the Aegis seems to be a decent knife. If it were me I would either send the piece of multiple asterisk laden knife back to the dealer or SOG for a replacement or repair.

+1 on the Spyderco suggestion. I've owned many many Spyderco and am hard pressed to recall any issues at all.

Not a very good built knife, i bought one took it out of the box looked at it, put it back in the box and put it on my shelf about six months ago, have not even thought about picking it up ever since. like gixer says plastic-no liner

I've had an Aegis for about two years. It was actually my first "good" knife (e.g. not $10 no brand knife purchased on Ebay.) I've been very happy with it. I'd contact the folks at SOG with your problem. This is a better solution then randomly stripping the pivot. Also, AO knives have a bit of play generally; this is true for pretty much all AO knives.

This is a massive load of BS. I've owned or do own AO knives from just about every major company that makes them. SOG, Buck, CRKT, Kershaw, Benchmade, Gerber, Meyerco, even some United Cutlery and DX no-name Chinese cheapies. Some were dogs in other ways (Buck's AO system is slow as balls, Gerber has awful steel), but the only, and I mean ONLY AO knife I've ever had develop unfixable blade play was a Sog Flash 1. This includes a junky Meyerco A-Ok that I paid $7 for off of eBay.

When SOG lays the line on you about "all AO knives have some play" it's their not-unsubtle way of telling you they don't stand behind their products. SOG has some decent stuff but their CS straight up sucks and is the reason I don't own any more. There is also the issue that SOGs AO system uses a dual spring system that's pretty easily fouled.

Get a Kershaw AO knife - it's night and day. Even one of their Chinese line AOs like the OSO Sweet.

Returned that junk this morning. Bass pros awesome about returns BTW. On my way home now with a spiderco tenacious. Only thing I don't like about it is the letters C H I N A on the blade. And I'm not sure about the steel, but im sure it will be fine for what ill be using it for. This may replace my mini griptilian. This is an actual knife not a carnival prize.

Yeah I agree. I have a blur and like it a lot but never use it because unfortunately its a serrated tanto. And the thumb studs eat into my wallet. Is like to somehow get it traded for a plain edge.

Anyway I'm happy with this spyderco, my first. I stays away for a while because I don't like the cheesy grips, but this ones nice. Especially for 50 bucks.

Wow, strong response. Every kershaw ao I've ever owned or even fondled has had a bit of play. Not anymore so then my aegis or some of the benchmade ao's. But yea, they've all had some amount of play. The aegis is no better or worse then the kershaws.

I'd say the only ao's that I've handled that had no play at all were either the zt 0350 and bm 790.

My blur feels like a fixed blade. Maybe I got a good one. But the aegis and blur are not in the same league imo as far as durability.

I've got a CRKT Montu and a Benchmade Aphid (original Red Class version) literally right in front of me, and both have zero blade play in lockup. I have a Whirlwind that I've used consistently for 5+ years with no blade play. If they do have play? 2 seconds and a torx driver fixes it, no problems.

SOGs develop unfixable blade play over time. The Flash I had that I tried to get warranty service on would either be way too tight and not open, or open and have noticeable side to side play in lockup. There was no middle ground. This is not a unique circumstance either, as I've heard from plenty of other people that this was the case with their knives as well (even Nutnfancy admits in his reviews the blade play issues). The line I got from SOG was "that's normal and not covered under warranty". Considering the CS you can get from Kershaw, CRKT, Buck, Spyderco, even Gerber, that's a slap in the face.

None of my Kershaws have blade play. None. As a matter of fact, none of my folders have blade play, AO or not. If they initially had blade play and I couldn't fix the problem, they went back or were given/thrown away.

Edit: Actually, I do have a folder with blade play. It's a Native with pinned construction, so I can't do anything about it unless I take it apart and replace the hardware. It's very, very slight though.

I don't believe it. Everything I've owned from a Chive to a Blur to a 0303, no blade play in any direction. What is your definition of blade play?

I own two SOG knives....a Trident and Blink. The Trident is terrible, while the Blink is actually pretty nice (good F&F, came pretty sharp out of the box). When I had bladeplay issues with my Trident, I sent it in. They fixed the issue and gave me a coupon and free hat. Their knives might not be the best, but their customer service is great. I'd call them up.

im another customer of kershaw and have had zero blade play

altho none of my new purchased (not used on the forums here) spydercos have had any play either

My buddy got a sog ( trident? ) a few years back and I was very less than impressed with it... especially since his cousin is in the navy and sog is what they preached and highly recommended for him to go with

edited to add: yea it was a trident....

the pocket clip is pretty much designed to break if caught on anything

Not all production knives are created equal. That goes for same model vs. same model as well.

Sometimes you get that rock solid lockup, and sometimes, no.

Buy Benchmades and you can be sure they'll probably fix it though. I'd say any company worth buying from would fix it. Otherwise, not worth purchasing*
