Problem with the US Post Office

Maybe it'll show up on Ebay like some of the items we had stolen did.

The USPS office in my town is known for stealing packages regularly. They open boxes and letters, check what's inside, then decide if they want it or not.

Just last month my parents wanted to send me and my brother cards in the mail for Halloween (we're both away at school and did not get to come home that month). They sent us both $5 in the letter as well, and what do ya know both envelopes "got stuck in the sorting machine" and were sent back to my parents. The best part is that the envelopes were obviously opened by hand, the cards were intact with no damage BUT the $5 were missing from both. Yeah, $5 is $5, but still sad that you cant even send a card to a family member.

My brother collects Oakley sunglasses and has had his order "lost in the sorting machine" twice at that same post office. thankfully he was about to have the retailer send him another pair each time, but someone much be enjoying their free pairs of $200-$300 sunglasses...

I avoid USPS as much as possible.

My post office has made it very clear to me, they do not want to ship knives. Everything is fine until the package fails, if they see a knife, I will not see it.
Ron, That is flat out illegal for the lower types at the Post Office to just decide what they want to handle. You could Sue them. I went though some of the same crap after 9-11 here in my town. I went over the dips at the counter to their boss the Post Master. One counter girl refused to ship a knife to Germany .. I explained that there isnt a tiny person in the box with the knife to cause any trouble. ——So I went to the Post Master..He was polite and said, let’s look?—————— He had a Manual about 6” thick. He couldn’t find any code , Law etc that said that knives couldn’t be shipped to Germany or anywhere else by the USPS..Go over their heads, not hard to do with most of them...

I second this. I had to go thru the same thing when I was using USPS to ship pails of quench oil. The local postmaster does not have the authority to create new rules.

One of the girls at the post office overheard my discussion about this with her superior and tryed to tell me when I was shipping other stuff to not get in her line when shipping knives ..I told her that she works for me. Not the other way around and will do her job of I will make it my life mission to get her demoted and possibly fired and she is to greet me with a smile!!;)

Not directly on-topic, but if you have a knife damaged in shipping, it's not their fault.
Karl, where I worked at two different gun shops here in S Cal, when we would ship a rifle UPS .. sometimes they would run it over with a forklift and we would make a claim. Because the receiving gun store would send us back pics etc and the Rifle.... UPS would stop by and tell us that the damage was our fault , because it wasn’t packed properly

You can report that to the post office police.

So, I send 3 knives to a person in Texas, through the USPS. 2 day priority. I check it when it was supposed to be delivered. "Delayed" I check it every day since, today I get a message to call customer service. "Yes sir, your package was on a plane that crashed. Unfortunately you can't file a claim for 5 more days." That about sums up the post office, they know it didn't make it through a freaking plane crash. I'm sure it will be a hassle filing a claim too.

I used to use FedEx exclusively, I recently switched to USPS...my customers like the lower cost. USPS has generally been good and I have not had any claims. The USPS tracking system is not as robust/accurate as FedEx/UPS and that can cause worry at times. I do find that USPS has more delays, than FedEx/UPS for reasons other than real issues like severe weather/wild fires, etc. My biggest problem with USPS is their international tracking, I have never lost a package, but I don't like when the say a package has been delivered, it really only means (sometimes) that the package has hit customs in the country shipped to....that is a stresser when the package is worth $$$$. I also don't like the increased cost for insurance with USPS.

The local Post Office doesn't answer the phone, so calling the local postmaster is out.
Signature confirmation is a great idea.
How would one go about contacting the Postal Inspector?
P. Brewster, thanks for the contact information about the USPS Consumer affairs.

PDF forms online the usps website

I used it it Canada and suddenly they paid attention to everything they ignored before the written forms were in the system.

For a while my wife shipped several hundred packages a year through the usps. Mostly no problem but last year she had to file half a dozen or more claims on lost/damaged merch.
Trust me, no matter the box the usps is capable of busting it. I had a plywood shipping box destroyed by the usps once. Completely destroyed

While the USPS has it's problems, just try working with mail services in some 3rd world countries.

It’s no better up north here in Canada. I have had so many issues it drives me crazy, but we have very few options here. I had a 30 inch drive shaft vanish, and was delivered half the box with no explanation of damage or any form of recognition that there was damage. They just acted as if people normally ship half a box labelled 12lbs. The seller sent me a new one which showed up in a crushed box and was bent. On more than one occasion I have been refused pickup at the post office due to item weight. I was told that I had to wait for the one guy who works there if I wanted my heavy packages. One of them was 9lbs and the other was 14lbs, neither of which would be considered heavy by anyone’s definition. It’s also very common that on scheduled delivery day, I am told the item didn’t arrive, only to get an attempted deivery notice 10 minutes after the office closes. This is especially frustrating when it’s a Friday and I have to wait until Monday to get my packages. I have also had several battles there with one particular moron who insisted on trying to charge me Hazardous Material and Dangerous Goods charges when shipping knives because “knives are dangerous”

Well USPS struck again, I got a package in the mail on Friday that was empty. I bought a leather stamp off of eBay for my sheaths and the envelope it came in had a small slit in the bottom back corner were someone had removed the stamp and sent the envelope on its way to my house. I'm going to talk to the post office tomorrow and then probably the police.fullsizeoutput_209d.jpeg
