just bought my 3rd seb(1st new one), and have a couple questions...i know spine whacking is generally frowned upon but i always test a new knife this way, anyway my other 2 when spine whacked(lightly) gave a nice solid thud sound, but the new one gives a twanging sound(like part of it is vibrating slightly). is this normal? second question, when i received the new knife i felt some slight play in the blade when unlocked, and partially opened. i reassembled a few times it, but it only got slightly better when i lubed it. does the knife need lube to take up some minor slack? hope these questions/descriptions make sense. ...edit...i should add that the pivot was bone dry(no lube) when i received it.

That's probably the clip. See if its slightly off of the lockbar when its engaged. A good tightening will fix that pronto.

Play in the blade...that is quite odd... Make sure you lined everything up right including the washers and everything and everything is tight. If its all correct, definitely send it back for an inspection.

i checked the clip..it's good, all screws are nice and tight, and i believe everything is set up correctly. maybe it needs a break in period?

I know I must be the only other person ever to it happen, but I've had two Sebs that had that little bit of play in them when partially opened. I discovered through asking about that it might be the bushing is just a bit too thick and needs to be sanded down a bit to take the play out. Without doing that, the knife will have play, regardless of how tight it is. Anyways, I very lightly sanded mine on a sharpening stone(very, VERY lightly) until the play was taken out. I only did this on one and ended up sending the second one back for an exchange as the blade was also terribly off-centered(it was touching the non-lock side handle when closed).
I'm not saying you should do what I did. On the contrary, I think you should send it back for repairs. I'm in the process of sending mine back for repairs in the next two weeks right now. This is the one I received as replacement for the lemon. It has chips out of the lock bar and "sticks" when being unlocked.

As a side mini rant-I've only owned what amounts to four Sebenzas and three have had "issues". I must be the guy who gets the duds so everyone else can have perfection...

The Spine-whack-test is passe. Should all FB's pass the Vise-bend test? Just enjoy your outstanding knife. If you have a problem with it, CRK will correct it.

d#mn...it sounds like you were born under a bad sign. thanks for the info, and i hope your replacement works out better for you. if the prob persists, i may send it in, but i'll give it a few days to break in and see what happens.

i mostly agree with you abt the test...but i work in construction(sometimes in cramped spots), and have bumped the spine of knives in the past and had them close on me(only partially so far... thankfully), so it's habit for me to test a new knife out that way. i'm not the type who is constantly spine whacking(or performing other odd tests), just once usually.

Capt. Carl is right. If there is still blade play, send it back. For what you paid you shouldn't have any issues.

I've got 3 Sebbies and a Mnandi and have never had an issue with any of them. CRK will make it right.

update....the blade play seems to have worked itself out. thanks for the advice guys.
