Problems with my PSK. Leaking iodine + ferro rod = weird

So, I decided to pull out my altoid tin kit since I haven't checked it out in a while. Sadly, most of the stuff inside was ruined, due to an old iodine wipe package leeking. There was rust all over everything, including the tin itself, my peanut lighter, metal whistle, hooks, saw blade, and my mini-ferro rod. Some weird fluffy metalic stuff was all over everything, but primarily the ferro rod. All of it gathered up, there was about enough to make a regular sized marble. I was able to easily snap my ferro rod in half (it was really small though). My sand paper, bandaids, steri-strips were all also ruined.

My lighter still worked perfectly, and my firestraws are in good shape, fishing line looks ok, but I'll replace it as well.

The iodine pad was really old, and I think it leaked because of too much pressure. I'm going to head to the store tomorrow to pickup a bigger container, maybe one of the smaller pelican cases. I like my altoid kit, and I put a lot of time into it, but I'd like some more room as I replace some items.

So... check you kits before heading out!

I too have some Iodine Prep Pads in my little FAK's, so far they haven't done anything. In my BOB I also keep a small bottle of Iodine, that at one time had leaked a bit. At the time I was also storing my Carbon Mora next to it and it rusted a bit. It was near the handle where the blade is exposed a bit from the plastic sheath. Iodine is great, but one does need to be careful with it.

Naked,

Your experience is the reason why I have made the switch to MP1 tabs and why I have eliminated repackaging Iodine tabs.
