Does anyone know how I can procure a rail tie without just walking the rails and stealing it? I'm looking for something about 18"-24".

Thanks,

Jeff

See if you can find a local rail yard and ask whoever runs it if they have any used lengths they would like to sell.

A lot of hardwares and Home Depot, Lowes often carry the old ones, as landscape timbers. Mucho better that going to jail over a railroad tie! ;)

Maybe I used the wrong term. I'm talking about the rail, the steel rail. I wasn't considering taking it, but there are people out there who have. I just want to do it the right way.

I don't know where you live, but here in WA state there are a number of old rail lines that have been decomissioned. Some have been turned into trails. Others are just rotting in place. I honestly don't know what happened to the rails themselves, but I know some of the timbers are available at a home/garden supply store in Gold Bar. The rails and spikes might be too, for all I know.

I doubt you'd be able to liberate one on your own without mechanical assistance or a lot of help.

If you find a rail maintenanmce crew and talk with them you can probably score some. Try to catch them at the rail yard. If that fails, let me know. I have some. Brand new, virgin 1084 rail.

Thanks Gene, Let me see how I fair with my negotiation skills in the train yard.

I'm an engineer for union pacific and every yard has a scrap pile. Talk to one of the local guys and I'm sure they'll help you out.

Thanks Mike, I take a train everyday and actually talk to an engineer who is training and never thought to ask him. You have some beautiful knives, by the way.

Thanks,

Jeff

Talk to the working man. I was driving down the road and noticed some guys replacing some rails. I stopped and BSed em a bit and for a $100 they cut a 30 footer into 3 pieces and loaded it in my truck. I should cut off a small piece and have it analyzed. I have a life time supply of something heavy.

Balance Beam, I'm going to be the first 260lb olympic gymnast:eek::eek:

Actually, I saw the video Loveless Legend and saw how he used it as a working surface. Because the top of the rail is a super hardened, super smooth, kinda rounded surface, it makes for an excellent work surface when peening and such. I'm sure there are other uses, I don't know them all yet though.
