what do you all use to protect your knives from rust ect. especially on hunting knives that are used often in the field under damp and harsh enviroments?

I like mineral oil. It is non toxic so you can cut food with it and not worry.

Clean with soap, dry, wipe on rem oil, wipe off rem oil. Rem oil works good and it is what I use on my guns, so it is available. Back in sheath if using again soon, if storing I wrap in news paper with masking tape over it out of sheath. Never put a bloody, wet, muddy knife back in a sheath unless there is no other option. If you do this, completly wash out the sheath and let it dry completly, leather takes 2 or 3 days to be safe before using again.

Veg oil will go rancid on you, not a good thing to have around food prep area +1 on the mineral oil for that.
before I store a blade I put a wax on it I think it is called Renaissance Wax
I use Break free/CLP for most of my knives that I dont use on food. Most of you military types will know exactly what this is and why you have to wash your hands realy good when your done with it

I make a beeswax mineral oil mixture for kids toys and food related stuff. Add a little comfrey oil and calendular oil (made from stuff from the farm) and you got a good healing ointment as well. Good for cuts and sore milk cows teats, etc. I usually have a small container of this stuff stored with my knives and camp stuff. It doesn't hold up on knives forever, but it's easy to wipe on. And when your done just wipe the rest into your old tired dried out hands. It's real good for them. No industrial nasties to worry about.

nope. use mineral oil. vegitable oil will spoil. Learned that when i made a beautiful checkered cutting board.

I had an argument with my woodwork teacher about that, her class made cutting boards, and they were finished with olive oil. She said it wouldn't go rancid. I disagreed.

I use Ballistol on most knives. My kitchen knives are just washed, dried and left to develop a patina on their own
