Production Customizing

I have seen over the last year some intrest in customizing production knives,Emerson more than others and decided to simi customize my CQC7,Ti Bolsters,Drilled G10 backspacer, Maroon linen micarta scales,Anodized and jewled liners.
I finished the bolsters and backspacer lastnight and I am satisfied with the outcome so far,the knife should be complete this weekend.
The reason for this post is to test the waters to see if there is a market for this type of customizing from a no name up start at reasonable prices (pricing undetermaned at this time)but will be reasonable nonetheless.
This is going to be my way of braking into the knife making world kind of from the outside in so to speak.
I continue this project with the same amount enthusiasm as when I started so I know I am hooked.
I will finish out this post with with a Thank you to a knife maker who spent a great deal of his valuable time teaching me the in's and outs of knife making or customizing in this case Larry Chew one of the most prolific folder makers in the world.

Thanks in advance to all who read and reply.

YES! I would be interested in modifying my production CQC-7 with Ti bolsters, micarta scales, and some work on the liners (grinding a bit here and there). How much work would depend on the cost of course. Since I have waved -7 incoming, I figured I'd play around with my other prodo -7. Anyone else feel that itch?

I would probably buy a prodo 7 just to have that kind of work done. Go for it.

I have a plain edge that I would like to have bolsters, and Canvas Micarta scales put on. When you get a price, let us know. You definately have my attention.

I am not sure how I will post pictures when complete but will figure out somthing.
In the meantime I am intrested in getting feedback on the knife and might consider sendind it around to a few people to get their input and advice for future projects.

What do you guys think.

I forgot to mention that this is not limited to the CQC7,I can do the same work on a Commander or most any other knife Emerson makes.

Sounds great! If you can't get pictures, I'm sure one of us can do it and post them for you. I have access to a killer scanner, and John Hollister is our resident picture specialist. Many others have scanners and/or digital cameras too. This could be a great project!

Sounds great.

There have been several strings about just such projects. Matter of fact, there's one going right now. The next Rhino????

Fancy Commander
Antique Gold Commander
The Micarta Commander Project

And one right up this strings alley, Semi Custom CQC7.

EKI is opening there own "Custom/Production" line soon that will do pretty much the same thing, but there will always be a market for individuals to fancy up customers production knives.

If you need any help at all, just let me know. Pictures are no problem.

Thanks for the offer I may need to take you up on it.
As far as the custimizing project goes there seems to be enough intrest to jump in with both feet and begin taking orders when I can get a picture up and some hands on feedback from some of you Emerson experts.
Now I need to work out the pricing and would like some input there as well, what do you guys think that a production Emerson with the work mentioned above be worth, now keep in mind that it is some what labor intensive but this is also my time to gain experance so it can be a win win situation for everyone, customers get a customized production Emerson,I gain experance and any revenue gained will be used to upgrade equipment and add on to my shop which is a cramped 8' by 10'.

Thanks in advance.

John:
I have known for quite a while of Emersons plans to do custom production knives and no offence to Emerson I just got tired of wating.
My plans are to fill the void for as long as the market can bear it and then move on to full blown knife making, part time of corse.
I have been told by a few knife experts not to persue this avenue as there will not be a defined profit margin even though the customer will receive quality work the time it takes me to do the work will very from knife to knife,Im not taking on this project for profit, money made will be reinvested into equipment and materals I'm more interested in the experance I will gain in the process.

A little off topic I know,some times it's
hard to stop myself.
Anyway thanks for the input, any and all is greatly appricated.

Kevin,

I just hope that the price of the customization is less than what was posted on the Emerson site. $250 for Bolster and G-10 handles, On top of the price of the knife

No offense was meant, just didn't know if you were aware of the "C/P" thing.

I think your right, the market is there and it's a great way to gain experience.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

John

I also would be very interested, if you will do green micarta instead of G-10.Please email me when you finalize cost and time.

I'm interested!

Micarta scales bolsters and jewled liners on a prodo 7 or Commander, I'm there!

Let me (us) know when you work out a photo thing.

Ok guy's I have worked out the pricing.
Ti bolsters,Micarta scales and back spacer,
Anodized and jewled liners for $120.00.
If anyone in the future wants exotics such as Damascs bolsters and say Ivory scales the materal price would go up but labor costs would remain the same.

What do you guy's think

Thanks to everyone thusfar for all of your help

K Robinson,
$250 if we provide the knife right? Sounds great to me. Do you have any pics of some already done? Thanks
