Production Knife Rankings

Only one mention of fallkniven, and in the professional category? For me it's definitely up there in the elite or maybe even holy grail categories. And it's as production as you get.

Holy Grail Class: The knife that can cut all other knives (think the samurai sword in Kill Bill);
Based on this, cold chisel or similarly shaped will be Holy Grail, I think ;)
Holy Grail isn't about cutting other knives, and not even about cutting at all. Quality plays role here, but main thing is: satisfaction.

I know they are no longer in production, but I'm curious as to where any of you would rank the Beckers (BK-7, Brute, etc) produced by Camillus???

Very high... As the best deals on the planet in production hard use knives. (when they were in production) Now for the prices they are selling for i would go with Ranger, however my Becker's wouldn't take a back seat.

There are thousands of knives to chose from. Take your time, research as much as possible then pick your knife. That knife will be your holy Grail!
Lycosa

It depends upon how you're rating the companies.
For example....

The award of "producer with the most consistant and high quality control" must go to Victorinox.
Considering how many hundreds of thousands of Vic swiss army knives are out there, it's amazing how few of them have QC issues.

When a company only produces several hundred knives a year (or even just several thousand), I don't find it that impressive if they are nearly perfect.
After all, with so few numbers produced, each and every one should be hand inspected by the owner of the company himself.

For my 2 cents on Zero Tolerance, I have two ZT 300's and a 200, and I think they are right up there with Strider when it comes to a heavy, well made, durable folder. They are also at a better price point. BUT preference is a personal thing. I am sure there are those that think a $10 knife is all they need.

Elite-any custom knife from Emerson, Blackie Collins, Randall, Al-Mar, etc.....
Professional-Some Cold Steel models, some SOGs, some Gerbers, and military issue.
Commercial- Most Cold Steels, Gerbers, Spiderco, Myerco, Puma, Old Timer, Buck, etc...
Cheap, Smith and Wessons, Colts, Winchesters, Off-Brand and Pakistan Knives. Anything less than 440C, or Carbon V blade. Junk knives.

Knives I currently own:

Elite-none

Professional-Cold Steel models: 2 Bushmans, GI Tanto, 2 Xtra Large Voyagers, Bolo Machete, Light Machete, Kukri LT, Plainsman Tomahawk, Ontario Spec-Plus Marine Knife, Ontario MK 3 Navy-Issued Dive Knife, Kabar USMC-issued Combat Knife.

Production-Cold Steel Kudu, Cold Steel Twistmaster, Gerber Lariat, Gerber Nautilus (great tool), Kershaw Liner-Lock, Myerco Large Blue Racer (Myercos are still made by Gerber), Kissing Crane Med Lockback, Scrade Clip-Hanger, Victrinox Swiss Champ, Gerber Scout 600 Multi-Tool, Set of Cold Steel Fillet and Kitchen Knives, Bear Cutlery inter-changeable blade Game Skinning Knife with 3 blades for small and large game..

Cheap-Ozark Trail Knife/Fork/Spoon folder.

I also have a Cold Steel Sjambok that is a wonderful self-defense tool.

This is a pretty hard list to put together as individual knives from certain companies IMO as good or better than the one above it.

Holy Grail: Strider, Crusader Forge

Elite: Extrema Ratio

Professional: Ranger, Entrek, Spyderco, Benchmade, TOPS, Buck Custom

Conventional: Kershaw, Cold Steel, Buck, KA BAR

Bargin Bin: CRKT, Gerber

Within the last few years, I have found myself moving towards Bark River for almost all my knife needs and purchases. They are an American made high quality line with superb A2 and their stainless 12c27 is heat-treated to bring out the maximum in quality. The myriad of handle choices and blade styles are more than enough to satisfy ANY knife need (well, except for a folder...), from small FB's to meet the EDC itch up to big ol' choppers. I have found myself selling off others to buy more Barkies.

What is the largest Barkie? Which steel does it use?

That would be the Northwind in 0170-6.

Bark river won't produce any more "knives" of this size.

Next in line will be the golok (0170-6) and the forrester (N-685) followed by the evo 1 (A2)

.

Holy Grail: a Koster/Krein K9 Folder and/or a Ken Onion Damascus Taboo (the K9 isn't in prduction yet, and short of winning the lottery, I'll never afford a Ken Onion Damascus Taboo)...Don't own either.

Elite: Chris Reeve Classic Large Sebenza, Kershaw Mini Cyclone Ti/ZDP...Own both, 1 CR and 2 Kershaws.

Professional: Kershaw ZT0200 or 0300 series...own the ZT0200, want the 0300.

Ok I'm going to list best to worst in folding knives, Then in fixed blades (My opinion)
<Judging by blade steel design, and fit and finish.>
Strider Emerson spyderco zt benchmade mod microtec kershaw cs sog crkt gerber ect.
Strider Busse, fallkniven swamprat cs kabar united cutlury ect.
There are so many veriations, fallkniven for example have the best contruction of all of them but vg-10 is not quite as good as striders s30v.But since it is laminated it would be better then solid s30v.I would give strider the design advantage.

This could actually be a pretty informative thread. Great idea.

I am only listing knives I have used and/or own so no offense if I do not list someones favorite.

Holy Grail: Busse

Elite: Swamp Rat

The Professional: Scrap Yard, Ranger Knives (both high quality but affordable)

I'm interested at how Fherman and Trident knives are ranked here. I have had my eye on those for some time. :)

Tyrkon,

I would give my Fehrman at least Elite++ if not "Holy Grail". I think I don't think of it as Holy Grail just because they're more affordable than Busse. It beats my Busse in fit and finish and slicing ability (as delivered). Overall, Busse still gets the nod from me for design and steel, but Fehrman is right up there and definitely worth the $. -IMHO

Ritch357, I would put Randall Knives as custom per our definition, a 5 year wait (last I heard) is not quite the "I want it know!" that we're aiming for.

Other then that, with the limited amount of knives I have (that whole marriage/kids thing takes all my money) I'd agree with Busse and CRK as the top tier.

I think of Randall Made knives as having a less than 2 year wait because I've purchased them from Nordic Knives (and paid more for them).

This gets complicated . Kershaw which are elite ( the ZT line ) and some stuff that is just professional , and a few that are downright conventional . Same could be said about Spyderco and Benchmade . Byrd and redclass are merley conventional , some Benchmade black class , and higher end Spidies are elite - high end professional . Interesting thread , with a lot of very good input .
