Isn't 3V a little overkill on a knife as small as a Hiking Buddy? no snark, just wondering.

On thick stock maybe. On thin stock no. 3V opens up the possibility to use thinner stock for better slicing while still having a high level of lateral strength.

That is my opinion anyway.

I think Andy said S35VN for HB and 3V for the camp knife. In my humble opinion, this makes sense. S35VN has a better wear resistance then 3V (though not significant), so for a smaller knife like HB that you may use frequently but not for hard use, I think this makes sense. Whereas 3V has a much much higher toughness than that of S35VN, and for camp knife that one would use to chop and such, it's a great selection. I have had experience using 3V ~10" knives from BRKT and Survive! in the past, and it's really a great choice of steel for larger knives.

Maybe you will start to like grinding 3V and we can see how the spalting will turn out:D

We are planning to use the latest and greatest super steel for these and we will change it up run to run. As that changes with advances, so will the blades. Overkill isn't to be avoided anyway right? LOL.

Sounds fun, keeping it real!
