Production model question?

I'm curious as to the reason for for shrinking the size of a CQC7 for the upcoming mini.

Why not choose a production model of the 6 or the 5? I've been reading and posting on this board for about a year now. From what I've read there would be a huge following for a production line of either model.

I'm just curious as to this decision.

The sentiment here seems to be, to keep the 5&6 as custom models only. I agree with keeping the 5&6 as customs only so when you say you carry a 5 or 6, you don't have to distinguish between production and custom. It remains to be seen as to whether the 5&6 will be custom/production models!

AC_23:

You raise a good question, however the short answer I believe is that at this time the 5 and 6 models are strickly custom models only.

The CQC7 has now been made in a variety of configurations thus it is somewhat difficult for a new fan of Emerson to understand the differences of what the CQC7A means compared with the CQC7B and so forth. With the "friendly skies" being everything but "friendly" the need for a Emerson knife to fit the needs of a traveler who wishes to carry a Emerson is limited to perhaps the CQC5, which is a difficult (and expensive) knife to acquire for the casual trip. Thus the "mini" CQC7 fits in nicely, with it's smaller blade profile, plus it can be produced much more inexpensively since it comes from the "production" side rather than the "handmade custom" side of the line.

I predict that it will be a big seller and since David T apparently is the sole owner of the first and only one, I would like to publicly state that I would be honored to purchase the 1st one available to the "usual suspects".

Don is absolutely correct (as usual).

I talked to Ernie about the Mini-Seven model and it was made basically for three reasons. 1) People wanted a travel (aka Airline) knife. 2) People wanted a carry knife for States that have restrictions on blade length (the mini has a 2.9" blade) and 3) People just plain wanted a smaller knife.

During the same conversation, we discussed if he would ever make a production six. The answer was . . . "No. The Six is the "Flagship" of the custom line and as such will remain Custom only."

But what about us poor people. Ok Ok, keep your six but let us have a production five. Come on, you custom collectors have your 8 and 9 and all the fixed blades and the vipers and the rhino and........ It's just not fair! The handle profile is soooo much nicer on the five and six. PLEEEEASE!

The only thing sweeter then the handle profile of the six is the profile of the Commander, CQC8, Rhino, ect.

Well . . . maybe the Mirage too.
