I want to buy a Buck 110. I like the looks of the $30.00 standard production model, but wonder if I should go with a custom for better steel. If I go custom, the only options that I would pick would be a walnut handle and ATS-34 blade ($80.00). Everything else would be the same as the standard production model (brass bolsters, rivets, etc.)

Question: Is the walnut handle and ATS-34 blade worth the extra $50.00?

Thanks!

I am using the Cabellas Alaskan 110 in S30V steel and it does excellent. It held an edge for me this past deer season than the old 110

Any of the premium steels should do good and are worth it, least to me..

If you have trouble sharpening a knife, just need to understand that the harder steels will be a little harder to sharpen. Just a matter of getting use to them.

you could also go with the Bass Pro Shops 110 with CPM154. I've had one for a while now and it is outstanding. At $64.95 you just can't beat it...

The Bass Pro 154 is on my list next time I swing by there.

tidefan,

What is the handle material? Also, is the blade etched with a Bass Pro logo?

Thanks.

The handle looks like rosewood or something similar, and the blade is not etched. It is grey like the Alaskan guide series but plain. It comes with a brown/deep maroon sheath that is very nice.

TAH...

Here is a pic of the two knives mentioned in this thread.
The top is the one from Cabela's.
The bottom is the one from Bass Pro.
Both rosewood.

You can see a Walnut BG-42 at this link:

The handle material is subjective to personal taste, but the steel upgrade is arguably worth it to me.

yes thanks goose! i wanted to see them both... you see post on scout 500?

Hey...
Many thread ago there was a discussion about getting the logo out of the Cabela's SHEATH (a band-aid worked good for the blade logo).

Well, the Bass Pro 110 CPM154 has the same sheath as the Alaskan from Cabela's but without the embossed logo.

There, passing that on is my good deed for today.

To ME- no... As a user I prefer the standard model. It's affordable, I ain't afraid to use it!

As a collector I would buy the 110 Custom. For display only.
The 420HC stays plenty sharp, not much different than ATS-34 steel ( To me)

I have alpha hunters with the 420HC and the ATS-34-(price was right),
Both are equally well. ANY Buck Knife is going to be sharp and stay sharp.
I guess it would depend on the degree of which you use it also.
My EDC gets USED... And I don't mean that it just opens mail :D
If it can be cut I will cut it.
Hope I helped a little bit anyway.
You know what though- after all this,
Buy one of each, thats usually how most of us do it :D
Then post your thoughts!!!
Good luck.

Jim,

I took your advice and decided to start with a standard model. Last night, I bought one at Dick's Sporting Goods for $30.00 and was given a $10.00 rebate coupon. It's a lot of knife for 20 bucks. I selected a handle that has beautiful, matching wood grain and isn't so "striped". I didn't like the shine on the wood, so I taped the bolsters and rubbed the wood down with #0000 steel wool giving it a soft, satin finish which IMO looks nicer.

I'm sure this knife will grow on me, so a custom probably isn't too far down the road.

Thanks to everyone for all your help!

I personally like the stripey and shiney wood on the "standard" 110 Bucks.
Can you post a pic?

Goose,

Unfortunately, I do not own a digital camera. The steel wool's satin finish on the handle is so subtle that I doubt a camera could pick it up. It gives the wood a warm, mellow, natural look with a very soft sheen.

Geez, that last sentence makes me sound like Martha Stewart.

Glad that you liked it!!! So do you have that custom 110 ordered yet :D

If you like the look of the standard 110, and there are no custom options you really want other than the blade steel, get a standard 110 and send it to Buck for a replacement blade in BG-42. Cheaper than a customshop 110, you get BG-42, and the wood that you wanted anyways.
