Production or Custom 110?

Hair,

That is an option that I'm considering. Do you know the cost of a BG-42 blade and the turn around time?

Several of us have gotten emails from [a certain executive of Buck knives] stating that BG-42 blades are no longer available... :(

This cracks me up...Goose just happens to have the two knives in question. Makes me wonder how many knives you got!

Yes, I also heard from a certain Buckaroo that BG-42 is no more. :(
I would recomend the S30V as an alternative though. I was talking to our heat treat guy today and he says the 2 steels are very similar in composition, rockwell, and edge retention. Well, he did not really say anything about edge retention but that has been my personal experience so I added it for dramatic effect.

Hey Joe,

Does that mean the S30V will be replacing the BG-42 option on the Custom Shoppe soon?

Not enough Joe!!!! :)
If Buck keeps on keepin' on, and I have no doubt they will, I'll always be getting at least one a month. Wish I could do more...
So keep up the great work!!! ;)

I was going with the BG42 upgrade, but S30V works as well and is fine by me

I have an order in now. I'd demand a refund before I'd take a S30V blade, but that's just me.

I spoke to one of the employees today who stated they just got a sheet in, and had been out of BG42 for a while. She stated nothing about future options or changes and I didn't ask. I was just concerned I would in fact get a BG42 blade on my custom.

It would be a shame if they discontinued BG42 for us hard core BG42 fans. The CPM 154 cm is pretty decent. I've had the Bass pro one for a while now. It's better than the non powder steel 154 cm version of that steel. All around it's probably cheaper and easier to work and heat treat than BG42. Is this relatively new steel why BG42 might be disco'ed?

I sure hope they reconsider. To me, S30V and CPM 154cm aren't replacements for BG 42. They'ed lose my business at the custom shop for what it's worth. I hate the thought of that because I love the custom options, and the superb work they do. I've had trouble with S30V ( non buck knife, maybe that was my problem!) in the past and lost confidence in it. 154, even the powder steel version of it just isn't up to what I want from a knife for hard use which the 110 is designed for. Joe,
If I were you, I'd get my hands on a Buck knife with S30V and try it out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The Bos heat treament makes all the difference. I think it is a fair replacement for BG-42 if in fact that is what happens.
Mike
