Production Sparrow News Thread

I didn’t even know this was a front flipper till last night when I read the whole thread…lol

Got the email about a pre order and I’ve been happy with the Ember and Q I just received. Figured why not try a folder too.

Hope I like as I’ve tried one front flipper before and didn’t connect at all. Short fat finger syndrome is a real thing when trying to flip knives:)

Doubt I’ll have a problem selling it if I can’t flick it.

There is a learning curve... But I'm sure we will have a tips and tricks thread with video tutorials on stuff. Once you get the hang of it it's super easy and fidgety lol

This will be my first front flipper as well. I’ve been indecisive about the front flipper Sparrow in the past and have asked a couple members about them and the ability to utilize a front flipper.

At this price though and the name (REK), I can’t say no to trying it out.

I own a few Reate folders, 2 from well known designers that were OEM by Reate, and they are one of the best for production knives. Definitely high quality with excellent fit and finish, build, and grinds so I have no doubt the Sparrow will be also! For anyone who hasn’t handled a Reate you won’t be disappointed!

Update on production Sparrow blade steel (I emailed this to everyone who has placed a pre-order but wanted to post here too)

After launching the Sparrow pre-order, I received an email from the CEO of Niagara Specialty Metals (who produces Magnacut) notifying me that it is a trademark violation to have Reate make my knives with Magnacut. He informed me that Asian companies are not allowed to produce knives with Magnacut.

While designing the production Sparrow, Vanax was an option I considered. Reate runs their Vanax @ 60-62hrc. For those of you not familiar with Vanax it's very similar to Magnacut in properties, yet with extreme corrosion resistance.

Vanax's edge retention at 61hrc is basically the same as Magnacut at 63-64hrc. Toughness is slightly lower but it's still one of the toughest stainless steels other than Magnacut, and in a folder I have zero doubts it will be top notch. Check out these charts from KnifeSteelNerds:

Overall, it is frustrating being forced to switch steels from Magnacut to Vanax. However, given the properties of Vanax and the heat treatment Reate uses, we will not be sacrificing quality - it is a super steel with great toughness, and as a bonus it will have enhanced corrosion protection. If for some reason this is a no-go for you, please contact me by 5/27 and I will cancel & refund your order.

Thank you for your understanding.
