Production vs. Custom

It really boils down to need versus want in my opinion. If the OP is thinking that he wants a custom, my suggestion is to wade in slowly and get one of the makers handmade production knives first and judge. Fiddleback Forge clearly makes a distinction between their production knives and custom. They are all handmade. But their customs are generally the same knife design with different steels and perhaps choice of handle materials. My suggestion is visit a knife show, handle some blades, and make up your mind.

I like Bob Dozier's blades. If you order a custom, what are you really getting for your money and wait time? It is probably the same knife and same steel, just with a choice of handles.

Is there any reason to get a custom made knife if I can find what I need in a production knife.

Lets say a BK7 is all I need. Is a custom knife going to do me any better?

Why do I need a custom knife when I can find a production knife that will fit my needs?

For 99% of the population of this planet producition knive is good enough ...........:)

Why Rolex when a G-Shock keeps better time.
Why a Mercedes when an old pinto will get you there.

Some folks are willing to pay for craftsmanship.

I have more customs than productions. I still buy both. I like customs for a lot of reason. Hand made, great heat treat. Your choice of steel, materials, look, shape, size, etc. If you find a good custom maker, knives are well thought out for EDC or tasks. It can also be fun being a part of the making process. One of a kind can be appealing too.

Productions. They are cheaper. I use all my customs, and EDC them! However, if I do something really nasty or possibly damaging it is nice to have a production close by. It is also great when you find productions as good as some customs. Also no wait times and easy to find can be nice.
