Production vs Custom

When I think about buying a knife I make a decision to use it or put it in the safe.Sometimes if I like one of carry knives either Custom or Production,I will buy a second and put it away.I know the adage to use knives because they are tools. Some of my production knives I also do not use.Kind of like coins. Are to be looked at and admired.
My latest daily carry is a Ray Rogers folder in Cobalt BH 6.It begs to be used.I cut up some chickens with it the other day and is as good or better than any knife I have. It is going on loan to my son who is a guide. We'll see how it does.

BTW Ray Rogers sells this knife for around $300.00

I use all of my knives...hard. Therefore, I've been reluctant to get too interested in customs. I'm seriously afraid I will lose, break, damage, or otherwise hurt such an expensive tool.

My current carry blade is a Browning Pirhana Pro (ATS34 steel, Ti liner and hardware, G10 scales). This is the best folder I've ever owned. It holds and edge and takes a hair popping edge fairly easily. I've used it for everything from paper to fishbait to stewmeat to wood and rope (yes, I clean it well).

The closest I would get to a custom would probably be a CRK Sebenza. I've held one in a shop and was very impressed. Of course, it would get used, so I won't buy one until the pricetag is a bit less painful.

I'm the same way about my guns too. I shy away from overly pretty ones because I drag them on hunting trips in the mountains and they WILL get dinged up.

Interesting. I've found that like most things, it pays to buy the very best you can afford. Personally, I'm a knife nut. I wouldn't dream of insulting my customs by using an el-cheapo while they sit in the safe. I collect what would technically be called "using knives", most all of my fixed blades are drop point hunters (most with micarta scales for durability), and my folders are pretty utilitarian-oriented (Sebenzas, Socoms, etc).
I don't equate "custom" with "collector value". When I order a new custom, usually my first thought is how enjoyable it will be to carry the knife, whether in the field or as a daily carry piece. I get vast enjoyment out of using the knives I've worked hard to aquire, and it is this enjoyment which keeps me looking for more.
*After reading over this I was struck by the simple fact that while I don't consider the collector value of customs when I order them, I almost always consider resale value when buying a production piece. Guess that's planning ahead for when I sell them to finance another custom! To date I've only sold one custom knife, and I still regret doing so.

You´ve all convinced me, I am going to use all my knives(except for maybe one or two). And now when it finally will happen, I feel like a child. Think I´ll begin with my BM 705. And this weekend when me and a friend are going fishing, I´ll take with me EKA-folding fillet knife and the Fällkniven F1. Yummee
