Profile with an End mill ??

Has anybody tried profiling with an end mill?
How about using anneald steel L-6 or 5160 and mill around a pattern.
Lay it on me

Hi there TJ, haven't tried using endmills to profile 5160/O1, but it should work great, I've used them on 3V/ATS-34/440C and it's left an outstanding finish, only thing I'd recommend is not running too fast, and make sure there's a steady flow of coolant to the tool- otherwise you run the risk of work hardening the steel, then it's a real b*tch to fix (unless you're using carbide that is)

Yeah, it's a cool idea...the thought of getting perfectly perpendicular profile lines via the end mill...

BUT, if you rough cut the profile out and then grind it to the lines, it's a great deal faster.

Actually, most of the time I just grind off all of the excess.

As long as you set up your tool rest square, you will be fine.

But, like they say, "different strokes, for different folks."

I don't say it, but I've heard it before
