what tools do you guys recommend to profile a blade for a beginner? i don't have a plasma cutter or water jet. just drill press and misc grinders
any reason (aside from taking time) those aren't the best way to go?

If you just need to get the shape I grind them down to a ruff shape and then finish them with a belt sander. If you are talking about the bevel then a jig will be the best way.

many first blades have been profiled by drilling holes along the shape and cutting it out with a hacksaw

Cutting it close with a metal cutting bandsaw with a Bi-metal blade and then finishing on a belt grinder will get you your exact profile with as little waste.
As mentioned, drilling along with a series of holes and then a hack saw will do the job.

I started out with a vice and some harbor freight files .its slow but it got the job done

I started with a few files and a hacksaw as well. If you want to speed things up a bit, you can pick up a cheap 1x30 from HF.

Back in the day, I used a bench grinder to profile them, just grind away everything that's not supposed to be there... there are better ways though.
