PROGRAM ALERT - "Secrets of the Viking Sword" on PBS 9:00pm EDST

Saw it last night, really great to see this kinda stuff on the tv, great lookin' sword too...

Hi Guys,

do you know if it's possible to watch the episode online at all?

Yep. Just Google NOVA and there it'll be. I watched it. There are some anoying commercials inserted in there and done so rather awkwardly but it was a very good program. They didn't spend as much time on the sword itself as they did on the NOVA about the Japanese sword but here they needed to provide a lot of historical perspective since this sword making technique died.

Fascinating idea. Real for sure "Damascus" steel. Looks like the Vikings bought igots on the shores of the Caspian Sea that were made in Iran, Afghanistan, or India. Crucible steel from 900 AD...pretty amazing. Forged the blades back in either Scandinavia or North Germany. Just fascinating.

Thanks for the links. :) I think I searched too early and there was nothing obvious around!

reviving this thread instead of starting a new one. just watched it on netflix very interesting. Now I guess I need a sword made of steel made of bear bone. :) And I thought Infi was cool.

For those interested, its available on Youtube, too

They just put it on Netflix streaming service too.

SPOILER ALERT!!! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN.

This was one of the most interesting things I've seen. I mean, who would have thought Vikings (and apparently Germans) in the 8th century were wielding swords made of Persian crucible steel! Just astonishing!!!
