Sorry for and old bump but how do you blend bevels? I have mainly gators from 80 to 600, On the craftsman metal moves fast? whats the best way for a nice bevel blend. Also what angle should a 4" x 1,5" flat grind bevel be.
I grind all of my blades in a very similar fashion, but without the use of any jigs. Another difference is that I typically start with a 45 degree bevel (or something relatively shallow) and "roll" back my angles from there until I reach a full flat grind or go as deep as I want to.
I will say that I typically use a tool rest to help stabilze the blade though, and it does help to have a somewhat "calibrated" grinder. I.E., make sure your belts are tracking well and that your tool rest is square with your platen.
All that being said, I would imagine that it'd be a much shorter learning curve to start out with Freds jig than to learn the way I did.
I have Freds jig and I like it allot. The problem I run into with it is I have a hard time keeping the bubble centered at times but I think thats because I am pushing too hard when grinding. How much pressure do you all use when grinding? Do you really hog down on it or take it nice and light?

You will get better with practice at keeping the bubble centered. Lock your elbows.
I use a lot of pressure when hogging the initial bevel. Once the bubble is centered I wast no time in making the pass.
