Project 1 vs Green Beret for deployment

I am not so worried about maintenance as I will have a tuf cloth and I will have access to plenty of oil and lubricants.
I am just curious if the Green Beret is worth the effort.

Update:
I did pick one up this weekend and I love it. I just can't decide as I still love my Project 1 as well.
Hmmm, maybe both...;)

One other thing to consider. With my taxes I plan to get a Sebenza as I need a good folder and I can think of none better.
However, I was reading through some reviews on Knifeforums and found some info on the Shadow 1.
If I can get one of those I think I will have the 'perfect' deployment blade. Plus another excuse to get more CRK blades.
Of the two the Sebenza is most important though and I need to know where I can get one with a speedy turn around as the word can come down quick.

I echo -

"No one gives a damn."

Anything being used "over here" is first and foremost a piece of equipment. It must be functional, durable, and replaceable. The Y-GBK (Howda like that one?) is a very nice presentation gift and/or graduation piece...and it is built right and comes from two truly gifted designers/makers.

But it is just a knife.

I'd venture to say no one would care one way or another who was carrying what version anywhere. That's magazine stuff:barf:

The CRK Project 1 or Shadow is great knife, costs less, better sheath (Blackhawk sheathes suck, period. Have EAGLE or TAS sheath made for your $$ knives), and are a favorite. One of our lads just came back with a new CRK in 5" (I believe) blade. He waited 4 months to get it.

Like Bruce Lee cautioned about the term "Jeet Kune Do" -

Don't make too much out of the name.

Better to know how to use whatever knife you're carrying in the manner you need to know how to use it.

And as Musashi teaches us regarding weapons -

"Have no favorite. Learn to use (properly and in its place) all weapons."

I just got a STRIDER D9 from Mick & the Crew at STRIDER.

Oh yeah, baby:eek:

Knifemaker Jeff Conte, here w/ me (or me with him as this is DS-2 for Jeff), just bought a Gryphon - Terzuola fighter...and loves it.

So there ya go:cool:

PS: Yes. I'm going to get a Y-GBK. When I get home...and for my war room's "I love me" wall.

If you dont mind keeping your blade wiped down and oiled, then go for the Project I or II. You will get a bigger knife, that sharpens a lot easier and is tougher. I think the worst thing I have ever read about the Project I is that the handle is a little cold in winter and some people think the checkering is a little rough. Simple solution. Wrap a leather shoestring tightly around the grip.

No one gives a damn....A majority of the guys that passed the course bought an unserialized GB to carry and they display the one that was given to them after completing the course.

Concur with Greg W - in my experience, the Army SF community is exceptionally low key - they are truly the "quiet professionals".

Even if they thought you a poser for carrying a CRK GB, few would comment. Unlike some other types of "elite" units, SF troops are more concerned with ability than appearance, and they don't get fixated on gear except to the extent that it performs as required.

The Yarborough is a quality fixed blade, just like the Busses, Randalls and Striders already out there. Nobody's going to notice or care, and if you happen to run into an SF guy in the field, most likely he'll be too busy to be concerned about your knife.

He might ask to borrow it though....:D

Medops,
Since you already have the Project 1, can't you think of three hundred bucks worth of other gear you might wanna bring to the sandbox with you?

I'm with Greg and others here in that you want to carry a good user that won't be problematic if lost or damaged.

My son is a navy corpsman and he ended up with the small Spyderco Moran in a special sheath (see the archives for some great threads about how the choice was made) when serving with the Marines. Unobtrusive and functional for a medic or corpsman, it augments the med kit scaples nicely. The late Doc Welch also gave him a MadDog ATAK but that one had to stay in the armory and could only be taken in the field on "special" occassions.

Another knife that hasn't been mentioned is the Mission MPK. Either in titanium or A2 with its hytrel/kelvar handle, they make an excellent addition to ones kit.

I had a beadblasted Ek #5 bowie with a custom cocobolo handle , desert tan fixtures and sheath ready to go in 1991 but my orders were cancelled.

Just a few thoughts......

I don't have second thoughts about my CRK GB when I go out wearing my Green Beret beret, my black RANGER t-shirt, my OD jungle boots, or my WWII replica UDT shorts.

:D :) :) :D

Uh yeah....ok.

Anyway I have a serious question.
How absorbent is the Micarta? If by chance we have a chemical exposure, will it absorb anything or no?

If by chance we have a chemical exposure, will it absorb anything or no?

Yup, well, that would suck. Micarta is somewhat absorbent - it's not like a metal or polymer, and it absorbs oils readily. I would follow whatever the decon SOP is for your other individual gear, like your LBV and PASGT vest, etc. If they chuck it all, be prepared to lose your knife too. I would say if you can decon your LBV/LCE, you can decon a micarta knife using the same method.

Most chem attacks would be aerosol, and thus not likely to really soak your knife handle, but I'm not an NBC expert so YMMV.

Keep your head down and your scalpel sharp!
