I just received a knife that needs a lot of work done to it as far as restoring it and getting it back to where it's usable again from a friend. He just said to do whatever needs to be done to it. Right now it's got some rust spots on it and is as dull as a butter knife, but the edge grind is in good shape thankfully. Needs new handle scales and a sheath as well. I'll be posting pictures on here of my progress. Work begins hopefully tomorrow or I might do a little bit tonight.

Plans for knife:

-clean and repair
-make new handle scales (black Linen Micarta with brass pins)
-restore edge geometry and sharpen knife
-Make kydex sheath for knife (red)

How did this knife turn out this way?

That's a really good question. I think that it's a really old one that he picked up or found some place along the lines. So there's no real way to be sure. It could be rather old by the looks of it and handmade as what's left of the pins seem to be made from some sort of nails. Or the ends one side just got a bit mashed at some point. This thing is getting a bath in WD-40 for a couple hours after I get what's left of the old wood handle scales off it.

Cool project, let us know how it turns out. If the blade will hold a decent edge it'd be a fun project for sure.

It seems to be coming along well for me at the moment. I've got it where it's more or less a patina covered blade blank. No more rust.
