Project is proceeding slowly. I work an average of 50+ hours a week and therefore hobby project tend to proceed slowly for me. But that's good in sense that it gives lots of time for research and thought on next phase.
After attending a recent gunshow and talking in person w/some attending knifemakers, I decided not to use scales as I had planned for my handle. But rather go w/a block of hardwood.
Got a block of Diamond wood and have it drilled for the tang. Got tang ready to go. Got a wwod clamp w/slot cut for blade to hold it tight.
I intend to do most of the handle shaping prior to epoxying the handle onto the tang/blade for final finishing.
2 questions: When putting the expoxy in the tang hole, do you fill the hole up? Or leave room for epoxy to be displaced when the tang is inserted? My guess is you wouldn't want alot of epoxy spill over. About what is the formula on this?
And what commonly available (IE: Wal Mart or hardware store) epoxy would you recommend.
Thanks for any advice.

i'm no pro at this , so knowing this is how i do mine.
i use 30 min epoxy and filll within 14 " of the top and insert the tang, and wipe off any spillage with acetone.
the tang that i end up with,i take and put slots on the sides to bind better, and clamp where i want the blade part .
hope this helps. vern

Hi, I fill to the top and clean the spill over after you set the tang with acetone. Then do the final sanding on the handle. The diluted epoxy sands right off. A hint: Drill a small hole through the bottom of the handle through to where the tang ends internally and cover it with a pc of masking tape. When the hole fills up pull the tape away and let any trapped air and a little of the epoxy run out then re tape. The longer the cure on the epoxy the more viscus it will be and the easier the flow and clean up will be. Save some of the dust from the sanding mix with a little epoxy after the tang is set and fill the hole and sand. Works every time.
