Prometheus Design Werx

What is your question? I'm sorry if this seems offensive but are you serious? You are going to join a forum and post personal opinions about a company as your first post??? Go do research if you have questions. This is not the place for threads like this.

Both the OP & you have edited your comments here, so I can't really tell what's going on. I'd have to agree, the OP isn't going to win any awards for his opening post, but so what? I must be missing something, as your reaction isn't jiving with what's currently visible in the posts. It really doesn't matter all that much either way, the whole thing/interaction just struck me as odd.

the whole thing/interaction just struck me as odd.
Forum misinterpretations are common. Didn't intend to irritate anyone. My edit was simply a misspelling which I corrected (Prometheus). I simply found the company's online interaction a little distant and confusing. I'm sure they don't have a massive staff to warmly respond to my questions and I'm not dinging them really - just calling it like I saw it. Ruggdogg87 had recently purchased from them and I suppose felt they deserved defending.

Seek out the "other major knife forum". Like I said, they have a very strong presence over there and would respond within minutes to any questions, I'm not exaggerating either. I've personally dealt with their marketing head and he responds to any questions very quickly. Unfortunately, there is no official PDW presence here on BladeForums.

I mentally lump it in with Steel Flame, knucks, "EDC" tops, $300 titanium bottle openers, and all of that other overpriced pointless BS. Their value is set by the price they demand and artificially limited supply, not any inherent quality or material superiority.

I disagree. If you look at the knife collaborations they're putting out, the prices are nearly exactly what the normal version would be, e.g. MSC SnG vs PDW edition MSC SnG and SMF. Although, I can't argue that their apparel and "EDC tools" are certainly pricey, but it's all on par with their competitors. As always, we have to bear in mind that value is entirely subjective.

Will do, Max. Thanks for the advice.

True That. For myself I stuck with medium price cold steel knives for my using knives. Im to the point where I would love a 12oo buck knife, but it aint really necessary.
Realistically, if this were a motorcycle forum, I'd probably be saying similar things about Harley Davidson merch, and if it were a car forum, Lamborghinis. Almost any hobby is going to have an upper echelon of blatantly overpriced wares that appeal to one's sense of extravagance. I don't see appeal in expense for the sake of expense, but I know it's a mindset and nothing inherent to a hobby. My ex really liked "rose gold" things and "royal" colors because she mentally equates those with wealth and thus success, and that was an image she liked to portray.

I don't find these companies or marketing to be damaging in any way, but I do find it laughable to a degree even though I realize I'm guilty of hypocrisy because the vast majority would see my $300 automatic pocket knife very much the same way I view a $1200 knife that has $400 artificially added to the price. It's a matter of scale and perspective, I suppose.

I have two tad gear jackets that I bought about 7 years ago on sale and they have lasted through a lot more than I thought they would and still look relatively new. They were a little pricey but are definitely quality products that last.

I also bought a PDW Emerson for the same price as a normal version so the price really wasn't jacked up.

And steel flame makes very nice stuff. A lot of it isn't for me, but my wife and I have matching necklaces that were not overly expensive. They also custom made her engagement ring and wedding band which are absolutely beautiful.

PDW was started after TAD's Founder and Chief Designer was forced out of his original company, in a corporate takeover of sorts.

I have been following then since near the beginning and they actually have almost like a community. As others have said they have a big presence on another forum and on facebook. The password thing is only implemented right before a drop so only the owners can access during the changes.

While that makes sense on their end, as a relative newbie to knives (and certainly the tactical universe) I misinterpreted the access denial. I'm still unclear as to what the exact nature of a "drop" is - just a term for product updates? A "We are updating the site. Please check back later" message would have been more customer friendly to prospective buyers. It's a small thing, but could potentially turn away a future sale.

My impression is that PDW does business a little differently than other companies. That impression is the result of some email interaction with them. I kind of get that - I'm not part of their community. Nothing wrong with exclusivity if you can make the business model work.

A "drop" is them releasing new products, it's very easy to become part of their community there is no special initiation or fee required just simply join if you like.
