Pronounce "Puukko."

From the info and consensus here, I guess I was correct in pronouncing it Puukko, as it is spelled. :) My wife just got a little Thai puppy dog we call Mikko.

I have an old and fancy Puukko knife bought at a flea market. Handle parts are a bit loose but nicely made. Except it looks like it is chrome plated or some such.

(Mea Culpa ... I'm the one who posted the less-than-adult humor. 64 going on 14.)

I think the real question is, how the heck do you pronounce Jääkäripuukko? :D

Here's my take: YAH-kah-ree-poo-koh

:)
Puukko, is pronounced just like you write it, without pause in middle.
(All Finnish words are pronouced like you write it.)

Let me try to help You with puukko.

P like pick, UU like oo in "moon", KK hard double consonant like k in "kit", and O like o in ouch!
so it's Puukko.

And Jääkäri those ä's like -a- in cat.

Hope this helps!:)

Hey red ! Here and I thought you knew EVERYTHING ! HFinn would know for sure but you already pooped in that pool ! I have no earthly notion but just like you I don't mind soiling a thread for my personal amusement . Anyway I love the sound of " POON-COW " . I might buy a cheap Finnish knife just so I could say that .

The word Puukko comes from Finnish word "puu". Puu means either a tree or wood. So a tool you use to process wood. I recommend pronouncing "puuk-ko". Thats how we spell it here in Finland.

This also reflects the importance of wood in the traditional culture, the ability to process it, to make whatever you need of this material. Either make a fire, whittle a spoon, sharpen a stick, make a fishing rod for angling small fish... whatever. These are all examples I have used the puukko in my life (allthough the spoon I never got to finish, I messed it up really well). Also I have used it to gut fish and small game and as an ice pick to save my life when climbing (stupid of me) over an icy ledge. A guy I knew used it to free himself of cords and a fishing net when he fell out of a boat while fishing and almost drowned when caught in the net, having a sharp puukko saved also his life.

And let's not start about how the puukko has been used in grimmer purposes, either in personal vendettas, in war or in criminal purposes over the centuries.
