Can I use a propane bbq to heat treat steel? I just read Goddard's $50 knife shop, and it seems possible. the bbq works perfectly, btw

To heat treat or temper?

I would say no to heat treat and maybe to temper if you can rig it with a thermocouple/thermometer, but your home oven would probably work better.:)

...and don't trust the dial temperature setting on your kitchen oven or toaster oven. Go to the local discount store and get a 3 to 4 dollar oven thermometer.

The only thing you have with the bbq that is good for the heat treat is the proprane tank. You can use that to fuel a forge. Better yet, do a search on this forum for 'one brick forge'.
