propane bbq question

Can I use a propane bbq to heat treat steel? I just read Goddard's $50 knife shop, and it seems possible. the bbq works perfectly, btw

To heat treat or temper?

I would say no to heat treat and maybe to temper if you can rig it with a thermocouple/thermometer, but your home oven would probably work better.

Toaster oven with a timer for tempering. Set the temp and it shuts itself off!

...and don't trust the dial temperature setting on your kitchen oven or toaster oven. Go to the local discount store and get a 3 to 4 dollar oven thermometer.

The only thing you have with the bbq that is good for the heat treat is the proprane tank. You can use that to fuel a forge. Better yet, do a search on this forum for 'one brick forge'.
