Propane forge tanks question?

I am building a cart to set my propane forge up on, sort of like a utility cart. Simailar to this, refrence this picture.

I want to put the tanks underneath but instead of standing them stright up and down I am thinking of installing them at a 45* angle. To make them easier to access and hook up. Plus the weight of the two propane tanks will kind of counterbalance the weight of the forge on the other end!

Does anyone know if a propane tank will empty itself completely at a 45* angle?

Any other problem I might run into?

I would appreciate any feedback on this subject you might have!

What Stacy said. Oh, and I wouldn't want tanks under my forge "just in case", but that's just me. I drop too much stuff :)

Some tanks are designed to where they can go horizontal as well, however the typical BBQ tanks I dont believe are. Most propane welders and forklifts have them horizontal. Ask the tank supplier, would be my suggestion.

Thanks evrybody!
I was talking about using two smaller BBQ type cylinders. There would be a self over top of the tanks larger than the tanks themselves, so they would be protected from getting hit from anything from above.
I suppose a freak accident might still expose the tank to getting hit. The tank connections will end up close under the shelf and plan on making the line connections where they are protected from getting wacked also!
I have a small shop and a bad back so try to keep everything in my shop where it can be wheeled around if the need arises.
Thanks for the info, I will have to design for the tanks to be upright! I will try to do a WIP on this build when I finally get started!

Don't buy or make from scratch; Scrounge and modify!

two words... barbecue stand.... I changed the knob positions to read HOT, HOTTER and NUKE IT! The shitty plastic wheels need to be changed for better ones but other than that it's great.

Oh, and don't make fun of my bumper knifes...

Just to explain my short answer:
Most propane tanks are for delivering propane gas to a burner. They have to be upright to deliver propane gas, not liquid propane. Fork lifts, generators, and other engine driven propane devices use propane as the fuel, and take it in as a liquid, which is carburated and burned in the cylinders. Since 2002, all 40 pound or less propane tanks have to have an OPD valve, which prevents the tank from delivering any propane if not upright.

actually my forge is cooler below the shelf than most BBQ units, and BBQ's usually come with the tank underneath.

69 I think I saw that anvil on youtube, is that right? Kewl Tongs by the way.:D

Stacy is correct, I used to drive a propane truck with two 100 lb tanks tucked under the box, the system uses liquid up to the converter which uses engine coolant to help vaporize the fuel and keep the converter from freezing up.

Sweany, that anvil was on youtube :) One day I will actually make myself some proper tongs.

Yea, I get the scrounge thing in fact that is my middle name! :D :D

I have already scrounged two old floor style dollies, complete with casters, out behind the dumpsters at the local grocery store. It is amazing what you will find out by the dumpsters sometime.
Someone had quickly fabricated them out of angle iron. There is enough angle iron there to build most of what I need to build up for my forge to set on. One thing I want to accomplish is to lift the forge up high enough I don't have to stay bent over and yet not too high to be workable, (bad back you know). I will definately do a WIP on this project.
Going to get started on this project, just as soon as I figure out were I have layed a valuable ring of keys down. Got to tear my shop apart or as some would say cleanup !!!!!!!!!
Stacy thanks for the info on the propane tanks. You know I knew the thing about forklifts and liquid propane too and had forgotten it. Think that goes along with the CRS Syndrome, and remebering what I did with that ring of keys, worst part of it is there is several things I cannot get into till I find them! :D
Getting old can be fun and challenging at the same time. While your on a scavenger hunt for a lost item you clean the house but, when you get through you are going, "now what the heck was I looking for"!:o
Progress made I found the keys!!!!!!!!!!
