Hello, I am a newbie here and I was curious what the going rate on propane is for those who use propane forges? I am looking to get setup with a 100 gal. tank for forging, but was curious what refills were going for. I know it varies state to state - but a ball park figure would be great for comparison shopping. Thanks.

$2.79 a gallon, pound, cubic foot or whatever it's called here in California.

Blub,
You got robbed, its $1.79 a gallon here.

Del, he's in Kommiefornia, he should consider himself lucky that they'll let him have anything flammable! Don't they require hammers out there to be nerf padded or something? :D

I think we're ~$2.15/gallon in PA.

They dont sell propane by the gallon here, they chare a fixed price based on container size near me. 16 bucks for a 20lb tank (grill size) 70 for a 100lb tank.

LOL My forge is made by a natural process, steel buried in lawn clippings producing heat with a catalytic converter so I don't pollute the earth but since they've outlawed gas powered mowers I've had to get a permit to use recycled paper to make scissors to cut the lawn and it takes quite a while so by the time the steel is up to forging temp I'm still cutting grass and it has rotted back into the earth. Handles are made from recycled aluminum but the Kalifornia deposit on cans is so high, I have to pay the state and don't have enough cash left for epoxy, but that has been outlawed here too. They say to make glue from tree sap but there is a law that says you can't harm a tree so I just have to wait until I step on gum somewhere and peel it from my shoe, but then they've outlawed medicine and if I touch tainted gum I might get sick, HazMat will come, I'll be required to pay a fine and someone will sue me if I spread germs, I'll have to sell my house to pay them off ..........I'll never finish a knife!

The tank sells at Home Depot for about $60-70.
A refill here is about $70 also.

there are 4.24 pounds of propane in a gallon , so at $2.79/gal it is $.66 per pound, or $66 for a tank full.At $2.15 it is $50 a tank., and at $1.79 it is $42 a tank.

This is what I learned this winter.
I used to take my empty BBQ grill tanks to the lumberyard and exchange them for new filled ones.
They wanted about $24.50 with exchange.

Then I got some advice from a forum brother, and looked for a place that fill fill my old BBQ tanks.

I found that at the local gas station they filled BBQ grill tanks for $11.00

I use a 40lb tank for the BBQ. I filled it 3 months ago for 25 dollars. My Ford F150 runs on auto propane. Auto propane retails for 64 cents a liter, while regular gasoline is over a dollar at $1.03 cents/liter.

Hey I own a F150, did you convert that?
and where do they sell auto propane?

Its a 94 F150 I bought new. Its 5 liter V8 is heavy on fuel. After the first year I wanted to trade it in for the Ranger, but upon finding out how much I was going to lose on depreciation it was cheaper to convert it to propane. Doing so mean't being able to stay with the full size truck.

I had the work done at the ford dealership so as not to void the manufacturer's warranty. It took them 2 weeks to do the work and they let me drive a rental (they paid the rent) during the time. Done and told it cost $3200, far less than the trade in loss.

Its been over 10 years and other than a small leak at the filler neck I have had no problems. The savings on fuel are amazing. It costs about the same as operating a small car as propane is about half the cost of regular gasoline.

The engine runs much cleaner, and parts last longer. The only downside is the availability of fuel. Propane stations are few, but if you know their location it is manageable. I also kept the gasoline system in place. The mechanics left the saddle tank, but removed the rear tank to make room for the propane. I have not used the gasoline system in years, so I do not even know if it still works, I keep the old gasoline system empty.

Since the system runs on computer, there is no difference in handling, and no power loss. The only difference that is noticeable is the wallet, the savings are substantial. It is no wonder so many taxi and delivery services use propane.

Gas here in NZ is $15 to fill a 9Kg tank with LPG (abut 20 pounds) take the exchange rate into considerationa nd it's probably about $12USD for 20 pounds. we don't call it propane, instead it's Liquified Petroleum Gas. about 98% propane with a few mixed other gasses like butane.

edit, about 2/3rds of the large chain petrol places have LPG, and about 1/3 of the smaller independant places.

You will pay the highest price for propane at a gas station. Call some of the places that fill tanks for homes. Some of these will let you drop the tank off, and pay them when you come back to pick it up full. Here, it makes a difference of about 35cents a gallon. Thats like 8 bucks on a 100lb bottle. Probably not worth the trouble for a small one.
