Proper storage of your blades?

Ive just started to collect/buy alot of knifes and I use to keep the few I had on a shelf in my closet, but know I'm starting to think its
not the best way to store them because of the dust and exposure to other stuff.

So here's the question.. How do you store your knifes? Or whats the ideal way to store them?

Ideal way to store blades is in a humidity and temperature controlled environment and away from sunlight.

It really depends though on the type of blades, sheaths and handle materials.

Don't store them in a sheath. Put a light coat of mineral oil on them if you'd like. Maybe, maybe....keep them out of the light.

But really, knives aren't precious little creatures....dust and exposure while being stored isn't going to do anything to them in your lifetime.

If you really want to get anal about them, you could get Ren Wax and coat them with that...it's kind of archival, museum-grade stuff.

But I'd just relax and enjoy them and store them in the open where I could look at them when I'm not using them. Come to think of it...that's exactly what I do. :)

This is how I store mine:

I use these I got from wally world, and put some tacky/foam lining in them to keep the knives from sliding around. It works well for organizing them.

That sir is a mighty fine way to store knifes, how did you get the "books?"

Also why shouldnt you store the knifes in sheaths?

You shouldn't store knives in sheaths because sheaths aren't typically great at shedding/wicking water away from what they're touching. They can hold moisture up against the metal parts of a knife which can lead to corrosion or rust.

You can find the fake-books at craft-places or hobby/craft shops. I found them at Hobby Lobby, but they were cheaper at Garden Ridge (They're about $10 each - I don't know if either of those stores are nation-wide though). Pretty much anywhere that has scrap-book supplies (my wife scrapbooks and I found them while she dragged me around one of those stores). I used foam project-board (like for science-projects) for the inserts, but I could have probably gone with Balsa wood.

I actually looked around for quite a bit before settling on these. I was looking at everything from jewelry boxes (great if all you have is smaller knives) to Doll-House furniture (chest-of-drawers or dressers), but really couldn't find anything that would accommodate the larger knives. The biggest knife I've got in these is a ZT 0561, but if I went with a thicker knife, I'd have to look for a thicker book (or spread the foam project-board pieces I've got in there to allow the knives to lay down on their sides). If I went taller, I'd have to get bigger books or put them perpendicular to what they are in those pics.

I didnt know that, so should I just leave the knifes out in the open with some mineral oil on them?

Just don't leave anything sealed up against them that might trap moisture right against the surface of the steel and you should be alright.

Just in a air-tight box, and if they're assisted or autos store them open.

No, please read through the automatic sub forum. Storing open or closed is the same.

Air tight boxes are not good either unless you can be certain that the humidity is controlled and that the temperature doesn't change quickly. rapid heating can cause condensation on the cooler knives.

I use an 8 gallon action packer and keep the knives I the boxes they came in. I keep
A humidity card in the action packer and desiccant packs in the box to absorb moisture.
When the humidity card tells me the moisture level is getting high, discard
Desiccant Packs go to desiccant pack pail for new ones and put them in the
ActiOn packer and I'm good to go

I store my better knives in SpyderPacs stacked in a safe. No way I would leave something as valuable as my knife collection not secured. The safe is humidity controlled with a goldenrod and desiccant.

The plural of knife is KNIVES, with a 'V'
-not knifes

thanks.
