Proper use of a Gatco Tri-Sep?

I recently purchased a Gatco Tri-Sep to use to maintain my knives while I save up to get a Sharpmaker. I'm looking for tips on the best way to use the Tri-Sep. The "instructions" on the back of the package seem to suggest one should move the blade straight along the rod, which would mean one would sharpen ones knives in half-inch steps? Should I do it that way, or should I draw the knife at an angle so that the whole edge moves across the rod with each swipe? Any other tips/tricks?

Thanks!

I find that the Tri-Seps works best if I draw the edge across one of the corners (including the large, rounded one), rather than down the flat side.

I've also found that using the "angle guides" like they show on the package is beyond my coordination; however, if I lay the blade flat on the rubber corner, with the edge of the blade just touching the ceramic, I can usually duplicate the factory bevel.
