Pros/Cons of high end folders??

I personally think some of the high end folders I see on this site are awesome (Sebenza, SNG, XM-18, etc.), but I can't justify spending $200-$500 on a single knife (Yet)(Nor do I have that kind of money at age 20 in college). I was considering some pros and cons:

Pros
-Premium quality
-Would last forever without abuse
-From what I've heard very satisfying to own

Cons
-Extremely expensive
-A huge deal if you lose it or its stolen
-Considered hard use but I'd be afraid to even scratch the blade, and I've never really seen an SNG or the like used HARD

What else am I missing? Is it really worth the very high cost? By the way, how much would a DDR Trigger Maze run?

Some of us do use our expensive knives and or we have both safe queens and users.

Is it really worth the very high cost?

Think about your question. Most eople that buy them will say yes and most that don't will say no. There is no right answer. There is obviously a market for high-end knives or we wouldn't see them being produced.

I would love to have any of those knives you mentioned. I do not know if you mentioned Chris Reeves Sebenza or not. But he makes left handed ones that is why I want one of his. It is just the feeling for me to own something that is quality.

I have all the pocket knives I need. My three that I will not get rid of. Benchmade Mini Griptillian with spyderco blade, My Spyderco Cat carbon fiber handle CPMS30V blade and my Falkniven U2. I figured if I use those in rotation it would be all the knives I would need ever. But there is always a new this or new that. I refrain. I will not get rid of them in the next few months anyway. By the way the Bench made is ambidextrious and the U2 has nail nicks on both sides.

If I had the money. I would now have a left hand sebenza.

To long of an answer I know. But for the long term and money spent, my answer to you would be no if you cannot afford it and yes if you can.

I am not a collector so what I buy I use. I have over seven hundred dollars of knives on my dresser though. I could never use them all and that is why I am trying to sell some now on this forums For Sale By Indivduals section.

I've put an SNG through a car door. Is that considered hard use? And I think Striders are kind of unique in that they look better the more you use them. So long as you like that military styling, a little hard use just makes it look cooler! You pretty much laid out the pluses and minuses yourseld, plus what the other guys have said above...

I can envision someone saying the exact same list of pros and cons you cite for a knife that cost 60-90 dollars.

This is all relative. "Worth" is up to you. Many will tell you that you will understand once you handle/buy/own/carry/use one of these more expensive knives. I will tell you (from personal experience) that they offer qualities that are different from many less expensive knives, but not necessarily better for *YOU*.

Only you can say if there is value beyond the tool's ability to cut stuff. I have some knives that cost 50 bucks that will cut VERY well. I have knives that cut 10 times as much...and there is no way anyone in their right mind will tell you they cut even twice as well.

It is not always about that though. Sometimes you look down at a nice knife and the smile it brings is worth something...that part is up to you.

its nice to own quality. take care of your stuff and dont lose it. i bought a lefty umnum when i turned 21, i intend to keep it forever and use it regularly, which i have. its not that expensive when you think about how much your spending on beer and girls.

and I've never really seen an SNG or the like used HARD

I EDC an XM-18 and a custom Strider SnG and they're both pretty scratched up, but I don't have any good cameras to show the marks.

Not my pictures. Taken from other forums:

Worth is an individual thing. ;)

I know people who think $15 is too much to pay for a knife....

I also know people who wouldn't buy anything but customs costing more than $500.

It's the buyer who has to justify if the knife is worth the cost or not in the end.

Personally I have seen $30 knives I think are nice and $2000 knives I wouldn't give $.10 cents for.

I own knives that are worth from $30 to over a $1000 so you know.... ;)

I bet the average 20 year old college student has spent enough on his LATEST game console + games to afford both an X18 AND a Sebenza.

i use them high end knives it is worth every penny to me,a pos knife to use or for self defense.........puke

I don't see many pros to high end folders aside from the pleasure of owning and using something spendy and exclusive. Thats a perfectly reasonable justification for buying them, I might add. But a $30 Tenacious opens a clam shell package as well as a $330 Strider SNG. In fact, it does it better. And you don't cry as much when you lose the Tenacious.

Whats "safe queen"? I have never owned a knife that didn't get stuffed in pocket and used. Now I for one do not look for ways to (abuse, ruin, destroy) a knife and call it testing.:barf: I have a Strider PT that rides in my pocket day in and day out with my loose change and shop keys and gets used for all sorts of cutting chores. I have a small Sebenza that has been in my motorcycle bag for "what evers" for three years. Gets used and passed around on every ride. Shoot, most of my friends that borrow it on rides have no idea what Sebenza cost. If you like owning nice things and your a knife person. Your gonna own CRK's & Striders & Busse and other high end knives. It's that simple....;)

Any item is worth whatever someone is willing to offer. I have $30 knives that do everything an XM-18 does. I'm pretty sure my RAT-1 or Tenacious will last just as long too.
And still there is something infinitely more satisfying about owning an SMF, XM-18, Sebenza and other high-end folders and FB's.
