How do you protect the spine and other exposed metal besides the blade from rust on a dcbb blade with micarta handle slabs. I oiled the blade but I don't want to darken the micarta scales and I'm already getting tiny rust spots on the tang/spine.:grumpy: I wipe down the handle after use but it doesn't seem to do anything

Have you tried Renaissance Wax? I heard this works, but I haven't done it myself... mine seems to never rust just sitting on my desk like this for the past month

You could try Lie-Nielsen Uniwrap paper with volatile corrosion inhibitor.

I use Renaissance Wax on cast iron machine tables, which can be very prone to rust without protection. But I suspect the wax will darken your micarta handle scales.

I saw a test that EEZOX worked very well. I bought some. It is good, but it is more of a coating than an oil.

Sentry Solutions makes a "marine cloth" that works great. It is more of a dry lube. Works great...

Food Grade Mineral Oil- I know that you said you don't want oil on your micarta BUT you need to get something on the tang. If you ever decide to sale it, simply wash it in warm soapy water. I have used mineral oil, gun oil and Sentry Solutions. The oils are all good but you are going to have to coat the tang with something to minimize the rust or stop it in it's tracks. It's not really what you wanted to hear but if you a nut about rust like I am then you have to do it. Good luck on what you do Bro!!!

If you get food grade mineral oil on the micarta it will darken it, and the next day you wake up and its back to normal. It comptely absorbs. I use it all the time on my knives.

verisharp,

Keep an eye on those spots. Occasionally, this happens. Years ago, I had 2 DCBB knives sitting next to each other in a drawer, both fondled by me a few times... One got a heckuva case of the rust spots on the tang, the other never showed one anywhere. If they seem to keep multiplying or becoming more noticeable, it might be worth sending it back to Busse for a treatment and re-DCBB. This is what I did and it seems to have solved the issue as the spots have not returned so far (2 years +) on the knife in question.

Ah, one more thing I forgot to mention on my searches on DCBB recently (good timing)... silicone-impregnated gun cloths.

I use Boeshield T-9, avail at Brownells, as a rust preventative. It is an oil/wax liquid product, and has done well in various tests.

Tough cloth works great, but I have never had one rust really ?
I did have a comp finish Sarsquatch get a bit dis-colored, but after I scotch bright-ed all the de-carb off it was fine ?

I use something called Fluid Film. It is the best rust preventative I have come across. I got it from a Napa auto parts store.

Renaissance Wax.
Mineral Oil never worked for me. Most gun oils are poor rust preventatives, some are toxic.

I sliced up some bacon and just wiped off the blade and my hands on a paper towel. Natural fat and my knife smells so good, it does pretty good preventing rust.

I live in a cold, wet climate, and the ocean is across the street. You would be hard pressed to find a worse environment for storing knives (and firearms :( ). I haven't had a problem with any of my Busse's rusting. I did have some spotting on a double cut blade at first, but after a few mineral oil treatments it has been fine. And what rust spots had shown up I was able to wipe off with a t-shirt and cotton swab.

Good thread! I never realized infi would rust from everything I've read, but now that I know, it's certainly something I'll watch out for. I just bought an ASH-1 LE that is double cut and I intend to make it a user.

Congrats on the ASH-1 LE. It is satin, not double cut.
