Protective eyewear when firing

Yes.

Everyone should be wearing wear eye protection in the shop.
You want gauntlet length kiln gloves on when you put things in and out of a hot kiln.

Thank you Stacey, I knew I could depend on you guys for help. Could you expand on type of eye protection and gloves? I am totally new to this part of knifemaking and have ordered a kiln so I can ruin some steel.
Thanks much.

Safety glasses at e a must in the shop. Get good ones because it is pretty stupid to try and save a buck or two when talking about your eyesight. UV lenses are a good idea. If doing a lot of forging and oven work, a second pair of kiln glasses are useful. The Auralens AUR-99 lenses do well for our use, and are affordable. They also come in may prescription and IIRC, bifocals.

Most knife suppliers carry the insulating kiln gloves. They are often called HT gloves. The wrist length ones are OK for straightening hot blades and other forge work, but the longer gauntlet ones are best for taking things out of a hot kiln. The rush of hot air can singe and burn things a good foot or more away from the door. If you have a bushy beard, be aware of this!

I usually put on a face shield when pulling things out of the evenheat. Prevents the previously mentioned face scorching.
A pair of proper tongs is definitely worth having as well.
