I bought a Protonmail account last fall, to get away from Google, at least to some degree. The plan I purchased was for 5 GB of storage. The email service has been great, and I never missed my Gmail account, except for not being able to keyword search my archived messages (because Protonmail is enctypted). But then they rolled out a feature (or they already had it and I just took a while to find it!) whereby I can download an index to my hard drive, which allows me to do that as well. And the email account came with a free VPN. To top it all off, Protonmail just tripled my storage space, freely adding 10 more GB of storage to my plan.

Agree. Protonmail rocks.

Note that they support a bridge, so you can use it for example with Thunderbird and IMAP. Then you can backup, index search on your local server, etc.

Unfortunately, I have heard from various LEOs around the country that many scams are run from their accounts. This is not an indictment of them...but something to be aware of when you receive unsolicited email from them.

Apparently, some venues will not allow members to use their accounts.

I have a free account, and have had it for a few years, but have never really used it but to have as a backup.

I have an email with them as well for a backup. so far so good. I rarely use it, but its there in case.
