I haven't seen too many knives with leather scales.... so I got this brilliant idea that instead of looking around to find out why, I would just make one as a prototype and see for myself. I was gonna hang on to this one.... not knowing whether the scales would hold out... But instead, found a sucker... er, I mean tester to take it off my hands for cheap, put it through its paces and report back.

W2 steel
1/8" thick
Leather handle scales... epoxied, riveted and hot dipped in beezwax mixture.
Sheath is a friction fit fold-over pouch dangler. (not shown)
No lanyard hole.

Damn thats thick leather. I like the looks of it, Ive seen thinner scales in micarta, so Im curious to see what your guy says.......

Very cool. Nice job getting those rivets peened down and safe for a hand.
A sweet knife that would look nice with that small backsack you made.:D:thumbup:

Looks great! I'm curious about the handles myself...can't wait to see the report card! -Matt-

I like those pins too. My only suggestion would be to make the blade a touch wider. I love the finish on the blade also.

I like it, nice and simple

let me know how the handles hold up.

neat idea

Very nice. Wonder if it would enhance it at all if you laminated the leather the way Fiddleback does wood?

Thinking. Good stuff.

That ROCKS!!!! I have done a few mountain man style throwers and belt knives with leather slab handles. A little epoxy and beeswax makes for a very durable handle :) Eventually with use the handles mold to your mit too in a subtle way. The harness rivits add to the charm and surely they aren't gonna let go anytime soon.

Did you use butt leather for that? Or maybe 12 iron soles? Where are you getting the W2 flat stock?

I forged it from an old file that was almost 1/4" thick.... it may be 1095... it was a nicholson file.

I think the leather is 13oz or something.

thanks

i by wider, you mean broader, i'd agree, within limits. But thicker? naaaaaaaah. Of course, I'm the thin spine mafia don.

Rick, you beat me to it! Damn! I've been thinking about doing the leeetle psk knives I'm working up in leather. Maybe leather and a cord wrap, too. I was considering doing the leather with poly adhesive and doing a long linseed oil soak and a good dry. maybe even a tung oil overcoat.

I hadn't thought of doing the copper rivets, though. I was looking at making my own out of bronze. Nice solution.

nd a wicked knife, too.

OH OH OH WOW! thats well done Sir!

hell yes i would be interested in leather scales!

the copper rivets and rich patina leather remind me of my beloved 70 (yes 70) year old Brookes leather saddle.

this is NOT a photo of mine, but you get the idea:

are you
interested in re-handling a BECKER BK7 in brown leather and copper???

EDIT: holy crap, yer a fellow Canuck too! do you make sheaths?

I was gonna say, my brooks is only 5 years old and looks WAY more broke in than that one

off topic, but that one is new........i dont have a pic of my old brookes. I just posted that pic to make a comparision to Magnussens leather scales vs a Brookes.

to put it on topic- i've had some people asking about knives for their bikes, and the brooks thing makes it obvious how that should be done! With a leather saddlebag, too. Damn, that would be a sweet setup.

Rick- I am most interested in peeling issues. I figure the leather will wear and age and do its thing the way leather does, but the staying connected bit and not letting moisture underneath are my only worries.
