Quick question on how you guys approach a new folder build. Do you have cheaper materials that you work with initially for testing a new grind or building scales, etc. I'd like to think that there's an alternative to starting out a bunch of tests with a nice Stainless Steel and slab of Titanium that would help you figure out your design without all the cost.

I could be wrong but wanted to check and see before I started creating a dustbin full of high quality garbage.

I've been wondering this too. Especially, a cheaper way to prototype slipjoints and friction folders. Interested to see the responses.

Well I only make liner locking folders and recently also started making some for heave use and hunting. My approach hasn't changed in the last 14 years or so. I will draw out the outline of the folder in an open position. I will then turn it over and now cover the back with say 8 layers of masking tape. I cut this pattern out and now transfer the blade and handle separate on to some counter top thin laminate. I have the pivot point marked on the pattern so I pin punch this on each peace. The little bit of missing pattern I just draw in. So now, I now cut and grind the two patterns to size, and lay the blade on the handle with a pivot or similar size rod installed. Does it fit at the front and back and top and bottom of the handle pattern and of course will there be room for a back bar if that is what I want. If the two pieces are off a bit at the pivot I might do one or both over and change the pivot position slightly. I'm like you. I can't afford to get careless and waste material. After doing a couple it will become part of the way to start without wondering if I could just jump in and try something. Sure not a fancy way to go but it sure works for me. To see some of my work go to Customknifegallery Frank.
