Tonight was an embarrassment of riches.

Not only did I have an opportunity to meet and spend time with some wonderful people at the Khukuri Konvention (I won't name names for fear of leaving anyone out), but on top of that, I had the honor of taking home this prototype JKM-2 which Uncle Bill had only recently received from our brethren in Nepal.

Forgive the picture (it's late and I'm tired and rushing), but I just wanted to show how closely the JKM-2 resembles a Kankaanpaa (Finnish) puukko I received from James Mattis a short time before his untimely passing.

Kudos to HI and my late friend James Mattis for a project very well done. This simple piece means more than I can express so I'll leave it at that.

Thank you Uncle Bill and Yangdu.

Here's a slightly better look at the JKM-2 proto:

Gee, Blues, you come off so much more personable and eloquent on the 'net than in person...

Actually, it was great to meet some of the guys, finally. At first I thought I wasn't gonna make it, but then a gracious e-mail informed me that the konvention started at 6:00, which just left me time to get there after work

Blues, ya got a great knife, use it well in memory of a great person, who is sorely missed around here.

(For those who just had to know, I picked up a Kesar Karda [that's a Kumar Karda made by Kesar] and a JKM-1 mini-prybar. 8 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. I also got to try RayC's quickdraw technique. It really works!)

Thanks Bro.!!!!

The prototype looks more like a puukko than the later models with the chiruwa handles.
Can you imagine what they would have looked like with some beautifully figured rosewood handles and copper ferrules?!?!?!?!?
biggrin.gif

And like I keep saying, "If you want a whole new degree of sharp take the time and put a single edge bevel on your JKM-1!!!!!"

Or I could just send it to you, Yvsa!

By the way, your presence was sorely missed.

Oh, and Tom F., thanks, I think....

Well I am glad that I didn't plan on going. I have just now gotten over what can be best termed: 'Asian Death FLu'. Really unpleasant stuff.

One of these days I will get to one of these things. I am sorry that I was not able to go.

One of these days.

Hope everyone who did attend had a great time.

I also hope that Uncle left with less knives that he went out there with.

Hey Yvsa,

Do you use a single bevel on all your carving tools?

Since the JKM-1 is basically a carving tool, I have been sharpening it like I do with all my carving tools.

That is:
step 1) Correct the primary bevel Make it a steep angle, aprox 20-25 degrees. This is easily accomplished with a ceramic sharpening stone. (I use these on a lot of my tools, very agressive cutting, leaves a clean finnish an the fine stone)

step 2) Sharpen a slightly steeper angle about starting about 2-3mm back from the cutting edge. Bringing the cutting angle to 25-30 degrees. This make the agle easier to sharpen (less metal to remove). A 30 degree angle is very good for cutting hardwoods, as it provides a very study/sharp edge.

step 3) With carving tools keep the edge polished. This means keep the fine stone close at hand and give it a few swipes every so often during the carving session. This is also a fine way to save metal. A couple of swipes on the very fine stone every so often removes a lot less metal than if you have to redo the bevel.

This is at least what I do with my carving tools. just my two cents.

Thanks for the pix. I'm surprised by how much the JKM-1 changed between your prototype and the later version. Do we know whether the later alterations were a result of JKM rethinking the project, or more a matter of the kamis taking the ball and running with it?

I don't know the answer to that one so we may have to wait for Uncle Bill to chime in when he has a chance to collect his breath upon his return.

Many thanks for pix, Blues.

This model I think we must call the JKM-2. Jim sent over two models for the kamis to use and this was number two. The first is the chiruwa style JKM-1.

The kamis did come very close but, as usual, put in a couple of minor design changes which I am positive they felt were "improvements".

:
Matt I sharpened my JKM using the original bevel and just took it down until there was no secondary edge on either side.
And that's the same way I do my set of "Whittlein' Jacks" and the other puukkos I have, then strop off the burr with a green chrome charged strop.
They all get so sharp that I try not to touch the edge as they will bite very quickly.

Blues there is something about doing one of these yourself that's immensley satisfiying and I wouldn't want to deprive you of that.

What knives are those at the bottom of the picture? They're near the in front of the topis.

There were some Kumar Kardas, JKM-1's and the prototype JKM-2.

:
Looks like I was wrong about the JKM-2 being the earlier model, not an uncommon thing, being wrong.
smile.gif

But now I have a couple of questions.

What's the blade size on the new JKM-2's?

And what are they selling for?

One more... How's the scabbards on the JKM-2, is it any better than the JKM-1 scabbard?

I guess I only thought I was done for a while with my case of HIKV. But I have to have one of
these.

It's a good thing I sent my check off for my new CaneMasters Cane yesterday!!

One thing a lot of people never notice about the style handles of most original Sammi knives is that little carved place on the top of the handles is there for a very good reason, at least on all the ones I've seen.
When you lay the knife down the piece is carved to orient the edge off the surface its layed
on.
This protects the edge from hitting on any hard surface that may damage it.
I discovered this by accident one day when I was considering reworking mine a bit and then I realized the Sammi people had done the design on purpose, much the same as the kamis in Nepal do things differently sometimes that we don't fully understand.

I wonder if the JKM-2 orients itself the same way?
Will you check that out Blues and let us know?
Should be interesting.
smile.gif

And Blues you will enjoy doing that edge.
It will give you something to do in your spare time.
Maybe you could call it Zen Sharpening.

Yvsa,

OAL for the JKM-2 is right at 8", not including the cap on the tang. Blade is just a hair under 4".

When set down, the cutting edge is balanced above the surface of the table.

The sheath is essentially the same as the JKM-1, but the thong is done a bit better for a dangler sheath.

Let me know if you need any further info.

Thanks Bro!!!!
That will work!!!!
It's nice that they're a tad longer although the JKM-1 works fine.
Now there's absolutely no question that I have to have one, as if there were before.
smile.gif

James would have been really pleased with the JKM-2 and I bet he's smiling from somewhere above right now.
