Prototype report with photos from the IWA show

Just when I thought I would not be buying anything. Now I have to get the Chicago, Cat, Rock Lobster, Temp, Bush craft, Sage II..............dang it

I found this in the general forum..

http://www.crossbow-review.com/News/IWA Show2009.htm

Click on "spyderco". I am wondering what some of these are......

1. The first knife on image 11, and second on 2nd row from the salt ladybugs on image 5.

2. Knives number 5 and 6 on image 10. Orange D4/E4s?

3. The whole row on image 5, farthest left row. I recognize the new FRN Stretch, but what is the second knife from the front?

1. That is a knife I believe to be a concept model, one I'm not allowed to post pictures off. If Sal chimes in to confirm that it is a production prototype and not a concept model, I could post more info/pics.

2. That's a trick of the light, those a red trainers of Delica and Endura 4 knives.

3. That is a Sage II.

The Stretch II is my favorite and most carried spydie since it came out. I'm happy to see it multiply in FRN variations. As Jur mentioned in the video, these are engineered just like the Delica and Endura 4 models, right down to the bidirectional texturing, clip mounting, and skeletonized liners. One improvement these FRN models have over the CF version is the jimping on the spine. The jimping on these FRN models is much finer and grippier, compared to that on the CF model. That was the only small detail that prevented me from proclaiming the Stretch II the best folding knife ever. With the different edge variations, I'll be sure to get a SE and PE in VG-10 and a PE in ZDP189, just to round out my collection.

The ZDP version is fitted to a blue handle, that's the exact same shade of blue as the first run of ZDP 189 Delicas.

This one was a nice surprise to me, I have been longing for some teeth in the slip-it line and this will fit the bill nicely. The UKPK Rescue has pretty much the same specs as the regular UKPK: G10 handle, wire clip, 3 inch blade. I'd love to test this one out, this one's definitely on my list!

This is another model that shown at last year's Amsterdam Meet, but that hasn't been released yet. Last year it had a carbon fiber insert, now it's G10. The blades are somewhere between 2,5 - 3 inch long and the fit and finish is really good. I won't be tempted to get this one though, as it's not very lefty friendly...however, I did see a dyad-type concept model that is lefty-friendly!

Unfortunately... that's all folks. These are all the models that made it to my improvised photo studio in Nuremberg. The Manix II is missing, because it was firmly in Eric's pocket for testing and evaluation.

It was a lot fun doing, and I hope I did the knives justice. Thank so much for looking. Now I'll have the time to actually read the various posts.

Thanks,

Wouter

DOH! now I see the multiple holes in the blade. Dang camera tricks..... i almost peed my pants. Orange E4/D4s would be SWEET!

oh and, if the FRN stretch is designed just like the D4/E4, I'm buying one for sure :) What's the blade length?

The FRN Stretch has the same specs as the CF ZDP-189 model.:)

Any educated guesses regarding the price of a Ti, S30V Sage II? I'm still a noob, so $125 wouldn't surprise me, nor would $325 make me blink. This knife looks like a dream to me and I want to have some idea how much $$$ I should save up.

OMG that Stretch looks AMAZING

I think I'm gonna get both the VG-10 and the ZDP :o

The cat is currently a must buy for me.. That or Chicago, but I want a 2.5 inch, knife.. And well.. This one is.. Nice!!

I'm glad that Spyderco is comming up with more Chris Reeves intergal lock designs. I really like the Sage II.

Apparently there was a little confusion, but the Terzuola slipit is indeed a 'production prototype'. Until recently this was still a concept model, which Spyderco prefers not to show because of possible major changes to the model, or that competitors run off with it. It can take a long time to make a good knife that performs and that the ELU actually likes. That is why some concept models take a few years before they become production models. However, this Terzuola design is definitely planned for production.

The blade is S30V and around 3 inches long. This knife uses a different technology to achieve the desired resistance in this lockless design. Inside the handle is a ball joint that gives the resistance needed in the closing of this knife. I got the feeling that it worked just as well as a regular Urban or UKPK, perhaps this Terzuola design is a little smoother to open and close. The carbon fiber seemed to be finished in the same way (that twill carbon fiber finish) as on the first Sage. I like it a lot. Note that the clip is left/right reversible, and that it uses only two screws to attacht it to the handle. Isn't that a spyderco first since their earliest models?

I saw and handled this design last year and back then I was a bit on the fence about this model. The opening and closing action seemed a bit gritty. Now it's refined into a very smooth opening folder. Finally a slipit for the boardroom and the office!
