Well fellas, since this is my favorite sub forum I figured I'd post this here as it pertains to a future knife knut and outdoor activities. I visited my family this past Friday, October 30th, and discovered that my little brother was needing to get his FIRST KNIFE for cub scouts!!! :D I found out late in the evening upon visiting, so we planned to visit the local Academy the following morning to pick one out.

As most of you may have discovered on your front doors (at least in South Texas), Saturday was the day where the local scout troops had to put bags on every door for a non-perishable food drive. This bags will be picked up next weekend from anyone who donated. So, after we spend the morning putting bags everywhere together with his cub scout pack (bears), I had the great honor of bestowing his first knife :p

Before we had gone to pick it out, I had him attempt to open a few knives that I had with me: slipjoints, small SAK, lockback, liner locks....and it seemed that a liner lock was the best thing for him. So we picked out a Buck Vantage

I think I was more excited than he was when I was showing him how to open and close it properly:

Oh, and the second best part.....I was there when he got his first bite :D

He tried closing it a little too fast and it got him. Just took a minute of pressure and it dried right up.

He is going to be working on his tot'em chip this coming Thursday and then Sunday they will be whittling at a family picnic. My wife and I will be tagging along, but I don't think I'll be able to hold back on the whittling.

Good knife...I picked up the Vantage pro last summer at SMKW...G10 handles, BOS - S30v Steel ,w / stainless steel liners .
Super sharp & very smooth to open & close. I was impressed for a $50 knife ;)

Cool story! Your brother is a lot younger than you.

Which model vantage is it?

I have been told that I will be able to give my nephew his first scouting/camping knife. This has me under more stress than any knife I ever bought for myself!

Can't wait to do it, though.

Man does your little brother look like a happy camper!

Right on! Great to see another enter the fold. He seems well pleased with himself there.

That's awesome! I'm looking forward to the day when I get to experience the same thing! :)

man that's cool. i was 15 before my mom would let me have a knife. i've always had at least 1 knife since i was 12 but i had to keep 'em hidden

Yes, it has a flipper.

Great knife -- I wish I'd had something that good for my first knife.

This little blade has some nice lines to it! Classy. Can you get a bright coloured lanyard on it - for his visibility and personal character?

Thanks for your responses guys :)

At first he actually looked at a winchester version of a buck prince, but since he had a hard time opening the SAK's and lockbacks that I showed him at home before hand, I advised against it (but he does have good taste already ;)). When I showed the Vantage to him, he was very excited and the hole opener seemed the best way to go. The nub on the back does work as a flipper if you put a little wrist flick into it, but I didn't show that to him yet. As far as he knows it is just a finger guard in case he slips. For now he is opening it with two hands which is probably for the best since I wouldn't want him flinging the thing around at his scout meeting :o The Buck Vantage is a very nice little knife, I wish they made them with a 3 1/2" blade so I could get one :p

Funny thing is once I taught him how to open and close it (and to never use it around our sisters) he was ready to go out back and cut a tree down :D Then I had to tell him,"you have done well young skywalker, but you are not a Jedi yet." :p When I'm not around our mom will have it put in a safe spot so that he doesn't use it unsupervised (for now). I think the little guys pretty lucky to have a knife knut for an older brother, just think of where my collection would be today if I had an older brother who was crazy about knives (I'm the oldest of four, next sibling is 10 years younger ).

I suppose the next step after he gets experted at the folder is a sheath knife!!! :)

That's great! What a cool first knife, and a fun bit of ceremony around it. He'll remember that you helped him with that forever.
