If you really felt compelled to do a DIY inlay mod you could search for a calfskin inlay Classic--I'm sure you would ruin the leather, but it would likely be super-easy to get out.
It would be cool to see a plain Jane machined and custom inlays placed.

I haven't tried it, but you might also be able to remove the inlays by soaking the handles in acetone, figuring that could dissolve the glue in the tape. That wouldn't be too good for wood inlays if you wanted to keep them, but shouldn't hurt micarta.
