pruning shears vs knife... for smallish vegetatuion

As mentioned, check out the micro-pruners at your local hardware store. Very useful little hand tool.

Sounds like you are going to use the item in a "Tactical" sense. I carried shears for many years and they work better than knives for what you want to do. Quieter, makes clean cuts, that do not leave sharp ends to stick into you. Try cutting your way into a hedge grove at night with a big knife, it gets caught on everything and is definitely not quiet. Go into your hide site at a 45% angle, pull some vexation out and away, cut your way in, then let the uncut vegetation go, covers your entrance point. With shears and SAK saws, my Team cut our way into a small grove of trees in Germany that had not been thinned out yet, very, very thick. We cut ways in, paths to all four sides of the grove, so you could move quietly and safely to change guards, sleeping and eating areas, and hid some 30 people inside that grove. When someone came to inspect, he was walked all the way around the grove, and was amazed when he entered to find 30 some folks inside as he had heard nothing. John
