I've been thinking about getting a new game system.I've had the PS2(Play Station 2) since it came out.Now I see they're(PS3's) down to $299.
I don't really care about online gaming.I'm just interested in the fastest frame-rates,best graphics, sound & (most importantly)least likely to break down or need service.I've read a lot about the PS3,but know almost nothing about the XBox360.
I'm a little leary about Playstation, because I went through 7(yes,seven) of them.I kept getting that "Disc Read Error" after about six months. The last one I got has been OK for a little over a year now.
I've seen the screenshots & videos of the new Modern Warfare & that'll be the first game I get for the new system.

So,which one's better? Please don't factor in price, just pretend they cost the same. Also,I know one is made in America & the other is made in Japan.I'm just interested in the highest quality system, regardless of where it was made.
I don't have an HD TV,but I probably will in the near future.

:thumbup:Thanks in advance for any help.

My son enjoys his XBox360 but we are on our 3rd one now. First one crapped out and was repaired under warranty, but it's now dead and we got a refurb. If he didn't have so many games we'd probably switched platforms.
Stay Safe,
Clyde

The xbox needs to be kept cool. If you go with that, buy a cooler platform for it.

If you're going to play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer online then choose XBOX. XBOX Live is the unprecendented best service for online console gaming.

NV,Thanks, but I'm not really interested in the online gaming aspect.I don't want to pay a monthy fee to play a game, the games & systems are expensive enough.

You've gotta get them both. I did. The 360 (generally) has the better games, the PS3 has the Blu-Ray player. They're both awesome. If I could only keep one, I would keep the PS3, because Blu-Ray is where it's at.

FWIW, both consoles crapped out on me when I first got them. I had them both replaced under warranty, and they've worked fine for a couple years. CM is right about keeping the 360 cool. Keep it standing on end, and you should be fine. Lay it flat, and expect the "red ring of death". The things generate so much heat that they cook their own chips off.

The PS3 has better graphics and frame rate when they're playing games that were developed specifically for the system. When playing games that were developed for multiple platforms, the PS3 actually runs slower than the 360. Either console will blow your mind with the graphics if you're used to the PS2.

I've been playing an Xbox360 for about 3-4yrs now. I like it alot and don't have any immediate plans to change to a PS3. That being said I'm on my 3rd Xbox, red ring of death...all have been replaced under warranty, including all shipping fees. The last one took about two weeks turn around time, and they start the warranty over when you get the replacement unit.

I have an Xbox 360 and love it. I play it regularly and it finally crapped out on me after 3 years. The repair was under warranty and fixed for free. I would have replaced my Xbox if it could not be fixed. I love that gaming system and the games for it in my opinion are far superior. The caveat to this is that I only play multi-player and/or online games and this is where it excels.

If you are going for pure performance and high quality graphics the PS3 is the winner but the variety and online play will suffer. You could justify both by getting an Xbox and then get a Blue Ray player(PS3).

I would just pick the console with the most amount of exclusive games that interest you.
gt5 v forza, halo v whatever the ps3 has etc

FWIW, and from what I understand, online play is free on the ps3. My brother is addicted to Battlefield online, just about any time I'm over there he's glued to it. :) It also has bluray, which is pretty much inevitably becoming the new standard. I'll get one eventually because, as the price becomes lower, it becomes more and more worth it for the value added features alone.

I've had a 360 for 4 years or so, it's cool. Have had to replace it once early on, a process which pleasantly surprised me as MS made it about as painless as possible. Only really play two games on it though, COD4, which is fun, and Forza 3, which is amazing.

Since you are not intereted in online play, I would say PS3 is your best bet. It hurts me to say it because I am an xbox player all the way, but the online is really where it rocks. PS3 also has blue ray which is pretty nifty.

Look, 360 is the shit and thats all you need to know- when FF switched platforms it showed who one- Xbox 360 is hands-down the best and i use mine all the time, plus you get netflix and you can stream tv and movies right to it. I've never had a problem after the first gen one, after it broke i got a elite and its been great. AND 360 just has better games in general- and i LOVED my ps2- i still play it.

see i am in the same boat here. i and my friends all still have the original xbox and still play the crap out of it.. however mine has finally started crapping out on me... so i am on the market for PS3 or Xbox360.. i keep hearing go with the PS3 bc you will get more bang for your buck. but i love the 360 games and battlefield.. love that damn game... i cant afford both.. i will be playing online

oh side question. any of you have DSL (the fastest available dsl?)?? if so how is the game play on that? our internet isnt that much slower than high speed roadrunner. its really not... any info on that? thanks guys

Online memberships are only $60/year. You can get them on sale sometimes for $20-$30. No membership = Weaksuace. 360 is the bestfor online. You can also check your facebook on x-box.

X-box players MUST BE KEPT FLAT (not on the side) and MUST BE KEPT PERFECTLY STILL while running or you will have the problems with them breaking and ruining/scratching game disks. Just make sure you dont bump it when it running. The disk spins very close to the eye and any vibration will cause it to scratch. I am still on my first 360. Not only that, but its in new condition. It doesn't even sound loud like most other peeps becuase I dont let my kid anywhere near it when its running. That is the key. Dont even jump up and down in the same room when its running.

All that being said...Playstation has got some pretty neat games that x-box doesn't have and the ability to cram way more information on their disks means they have better capabilities for the future. But if you go that route, you'll be outcasted from everyone else on 360.

thats just it the 360's are a piece of crap.. i mean really. everyone i know that had a new had to take it back if not once but twice or a third time. rarely hear that with playstations
