Hey everybody, I went on a little outing to test out my "psk" which turned out pretty good  The outing was fueled by the psk challenge that is going on and me wanting to finally take my sebenza outside :o

Well, on with the pics:

I had decided to take along my Daisy Powerline 1000 Pellet Rifle just in case I bumped into an unlucky bird or rabbit to feed the cats that were following me. The "shooting" took place at my fiance's family's ranch.

This is the area of Texas that I had to work with.

And a little more.

Here's my two hunting buddies following me as it starts to get dark and I make my way back to a clear area.

By the time I get to the area that I am going to use to camp, I have just enough nightvision to gather up some materials for a small fire, mainly for you guys :o I could have done without with my little flashlight and no food to cook.

From my kit I pulled out a small piece of a firestarting stick and fuzzed it a little with my Sebenza.

to be continued due to pics......

This is a shot of part of my EDC, which is a leatherman and a "texas match" whch you can see in the pouch.

My magnesium rod combined with the firestick and dried grass and small twigs gets a flame started.

And BEHOLD I have made FIRE!!! :D

That's all I have for this trip. I didn't even think to take a pic of my shelter but it was basically just a blue tarp for a roof and my bedroll for the ground which you can see strapped to my camelbak mule in the above pics. It wasn't too perty but it worked. I had to really shake off the leaves and grass in the morning since my roll is made out of fleece :o

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed my trip as much as I did, thanks for the opportunity to participate, J.

Sweet! I'm looking forward to getting out myself here soon. What was your time frame like? Did you sleep alright? Cold?

That was a cool read. thanks for sharing. Did you see any snakes?

Bryan

Luckily no snakes, although if I would have seen one I would have pulled a "bear grylls" and viciously attacked it with the shortest stick I could find :D

I did find that you really have to make the firestarter very fine for it to work. I had piled on the magnesium for my first run through and it still didn't start right away. A well set up fire makes a big difference in the amount of sparks you need to get it going :o

Sorry naked, I completely missed your reply earlier, you must have posted while I was typing :o I made it out midday, probably about the time siguy started his. I kind of roamed around, with my cat buddies following me the whole way, and looked for birds and rabbits. I did see a helluva big rabbit with it's winter coat but it was far enough away that I didn't want to just injure it (no scope just sights on pellet rifle) and have it run off. The cats are well fed so I wasn't worried about that. Anything I would have shot would have been posted for ya'll and then fed to the cats, no waste would have come

Sleeping was "okay," since it was actually cool for south texas, it felt like being inside with the air conditioner on :D My ozark trails bedroll is actually a fleece sleeping bag from wally world that works great for my climate down here. The only problem is that if I don't have an extra ground tarp (which I didn't this time) I have a tough time cleaning it off in the morning. Sleeping wasn't so bad. When I campout I tend to wake-up frequently throughout the night just to look around but I quickly fall back to sleep.

I basically went out in the afternoon and by the morning I cleaned myself up and made my way back to my fiance's family house. They all kind of looked at me at breakfast and laughed. I must have looked like a cave man with leaves and twigs in my hair :o

Great job. Thanks for the pics and the advice.

Thanks for viewing, fire can be a real pain. I keep a box of the REAL waterproof/windproof matches available for just in case my butt's freezing situations :D The matches that come in 20 per pack and are almost all red, you strike them and they flare up instantly and at the end of the sudden flare up they are ready to go  I did stick to my magnesium rod for this trip since it was more for fun than anything.

Awesome man! thanks for the pics and follow-up! Out of curiosity, What was the temp low for that night? I'm gathering you didn't need to maintain a fire throughout the night?

Cool thread Batosai117. All I can see are your teeth in that pic. LOL. Were you in the Kingsville or Laredo area?

I believe it was in the low 50's, of course I'm speaking farenheit (however it's spelled :o) I was wearing a long sleeve shirt tucked into my jeans so I stayed pretty warm to the extent that I was waking myself up 'cause I was getting too warm. As to the fire, I just made a simple one to post up that I "could" make one if I needed it, but it wasn't necessary since I had all the water I could drink in my camelbak and I didn't require any food to cook.

That's the idea, you'll never see the TRUE batosai117, very few know my real name unless I've traded/sold/bought something, and that's just for the sake of mailing stuff. You had a very close guess, I was in the Orange Grove area, which unless you've heard of it before it's just a dot on a map near Lake Corpus Christi/Mathis area. It's inbetween mathis and alice. Plenty of dingleberries all over the place, which I believe you can see in my first pic.

Thank you guys for your interest, J.
