PSK Challenge

The all popular Personal Survival Kit or "PSK" is widely spoken within outdoors/survival circles.

All too often I see guys cram as much junk as they can into teeny tiny film canisters, Altoids tins, and small tackle boxes. The thing I rarely see is people actually USING these items.

They usually have miles of wire, fishing hooks, needles and other odds and ends. From my experience in the woods these are going to be extremely difficult to use in a real 'survival' situation.

I've never been much of a PSK person. I have different bags set up to do different things and I can mix and match as needed. I can see the utility of a very small kit that is able to do many things, so I'm going to put together one for myself. I'll tell you right now it will probably be a bit bigger than most peoples kits, but it will certainly still stick to the bare bones materials that I would need to live comfortably for a day or two.

Winter is coming quick for most of the US. Does that affect your kit? It shouldn't. A true 'survival' kit shouldn't be a fair weather item.

My challenge to you:

Get out and use the damn thing! (Post pics!)

Rules:

- There are no rules. This is your thing. I'm not going to tell you your PSK should be a certain size or contain certain items.
- That said, this shouldn't be a 'gear bag' full of typical bushcraft gear.
- This should sustain you for at least 24 hours.

Prize:

- There are no prizes.
- This will differentiate between the guys who like to talk about their PSK's and those who can actually use their PSK's.

Now............who is up for it??

Does it count if other people use your PSK? If so, Snow and jwilliams put some of mine to the test. :D

And, yes, I have used all of mine.

Seriously, though, this is a great challenge. Nice idea TFin04! I will be taking my real PSK with me on an outing later this week, and I will take some good pics of the items in use. Except for the fish hooks.

All the best,

- Mike

Hey Doc, did you shorten that number 7 or did it come that way? I have one just like it but it's an inch or so longer that I keep in my Altoid PSK.

Also, what type of things do we want to see?

Starting fires, making fishing poles? that type of thing?

No, you're right. I shortened the striker wheel tube. It was originally an add-on lantern lighter, made by Coghlan's.

It's a great little sparker and will light just about anything a ferro rod will and it can be used one-handed with a little practice.

Oh okay, I got rid of that part that says "ditch this" as well. Great minds think alike :D

As to the OP, I have used mine for the string and cotton balls (plain cotton balls, no PJ added). More times than I can think of I have pulled out my strike anywhere matches to start a fire due to frustration from my old magnesium block :o.

What problems were you having?

Oh, BTW, when you quote somebody, if you remove the pictures from the quote, it makes it faster for people with dial-up, so they don't have to reload the pictures, unless, of course, it's germane to your point. :D

Mike,

That is a great photo.

I'll confess to being a PSK junkie. I have a kit in an Altoids tin that I made for the sheath pouch on my BK-7. In that context the kit in the tin isn't intended to be self-sufficient, the rest of the sheath carries other things that greatly expand the capabilities of the kit lie a space blanket and 5 liter water bag.

When the BK-7 stays home the Altoids tin goes in my pocket. I prefer to keep the tin simple instead of cramming it full of stuff that is just "nifty".

These are both from the last time I actually used my PSK. I have never been so broken down gear-wise as to only have my PSK and I can't recall ever doing a trip in which I went out with the intention of only using my PSK, but the PSK does get broken into on occasion as it has certain resources I don't carry elsewhere . My PSK is all redundant to other items I carry in a belt pouch sized kit (possibles bag?). There have been several occasions that redundancy has saved me out of the PSK when I failed to double check the contents of that belt pouch kit. I'm not so well off (or just too cheap) to buy multiples of alot of things and sometimes I use stuff from the belt pouch kit and don't put them back or I run out of things and don't replace them.

I'll be sure to remember that when I'm here . I bought a "texas match" over the weekend and it has worked great for once. The first magnesium/firesteel rod that I've been successful with 100% (that's all indoor testing and on the porch as I've only had it since saturday :o).

That's a pic or two of my setup right now, it's on me everyday, the "texas match" is the newest addition.
